Keep in mind you may want something the hook end of a tie down strap will fit around or possibly a bungee cord for small stuff. So I suspect you will want some sort of a tiedown loop there. Something as simple as some small footman loop on the inside of the rails wouldn't get in the way and would allow for lots of tiedown options.

this is what I was going to recommend or even just some trailer tie downs welded on the side of a rail, You could even use a large gusset with a hole in it

I can cut those tie downs myself at the shop, so that's not a bad idea. The gusset with a hole is also a great idea.

Search for "makerspace" or "hackerspace" in your area. You'll be surprised at what you find.

I'm all for the gussets with holes route.

the ones I used for my trailer hitch have the perfect sized holes for tie-downs. since you're gusseting anyway, might as well built in your attachments points, and not have any new obstructions in or around the bed

Good thing you can make them though, because they're on backorder

The magnets are amazing! The little one has enough pull that it will fubar a weld though. I was tacking too close to it and the wire basically spit out of the gun and didn't bond to the tube. Switched over to the right angle, which is only 90lbs of pull and did just fine.

If you still have the factory in bed tie down loops you could just bolt those on the outside rails. They'll lay down fairly flat, rotate and lift up when needed. Just an idea.

Just curious, were you able to weigh the truck before you pulled the bed then after you're done with the new flatbed? I'd imagine the flat bed is significantly heavier and was wondering if it caused the rear end to sag.

I didn't get a before weight. I'm sure the bed will be heavier so I'll be adding an extra leaf to the Dakar's out back. If that doesn't cut it I'll get a custom leaf pack made up.

I hope to make some progress this coming weekend. I've been out of the country for work and haven't been able to touch the bed since the last update.

I don't know about that. Having removed a bed by hand, they are significantly more heavy than they look. My truck weighs less than a stock one, and it's got crap welded all over it.

I would've never guessed it would be lighter. The stock bed is a lot of thin, former sheet metal whereas a flat bed is heavy wall tubing. But surface area probably is much higher with the oem bed, enough to make up for the heavy wall tube.

Do you already have an extra lift now from the lift? Might make more sense to get a new leaf pack of needed. Either way, looks badass and I wish I had the courage to chop apart a new truck lol.

Too bad I sold off the stock bed before getting a weight on it. Maybe I can find a set of scales after I'm all done and see where she weighs in at.
