    Hello TacomaWorld!

I have a mechanic buddy whom has recommended to me to switch over to 10W40 oil since my truck total mileage is now at 155K. The regular oil is 5W30. Is there any truth to switching to 10W40 oil is better for older and high mileage Tacoma?

I would stay at 5w30 like dude says^

In my manual...Good place to look if ya got one. It says that is a choice for warmer weather year around like near the 100's
I know it gets hot out there but doesn't stay that way kinda like here

Stick with STANDARD (non high mileage unless you have oil leaks) 5w-30 of any flavor (synthetic , blend, conventional) and change at recommended 5k intervals with a filter.

And dont ever let your "mechanic" buddy touch your truck.

I wouldn't consider that old nor high mileage. Stay with 5-30 oil. In another 300,000 miles if it starts giving you problems changing to a thicker oil might buy you some time before you have to rebuild the engine.

    do what toyota says.

all these old tricks maybe worked in the 1950s or 1960s. like filling up your engine with transmission fluid to clean it.

    Nope. No need.
I would not change anything unless you have a reason. Just because the truck had 155k on it, isn’t a “reason”.

If you check your oil and engine bay Regularly, you’ll now when you have a reason to “change” something.

Your buddy sounds like he’s from the old school days when engine wore fast and oil consumption was a given. That’s not the case anymore. Stick to the recommended weight and drive it:thumbsup:

That's not even high mileage for these engines... Unless you're seeing consumption there's no need to switch from 5w30. If you do insist on a 40wt oil look into a Euro 0w40 or 5w40...
