My apologies if I've landed in the wrong forum ... newby and all that.

Anyway, to date I've had/have an '81, '92, and '04 Toy PUs, the latter 2 are 4x4s and all have been manual trannies. I'm considering getting a new Taco but am concerned as there seems to be no way to get a 4x4 V6 with a standard tranny! Amazing ...

Are the ATs with electronic transfer case controllers worth it? Thoughts, comments???

    Thanks...

Doesn't di2nd gens have 6spd standard transmissions I've test drove one and I liked it but a lot of people said that it doesn't drive like a normal 5spd so id say go check your local dealer they should have one and try it out and if you like it great but the new AT they have now is very efficient and is very smooth and worth looking into but me personally id still get the standard

When I bought my 2009 it depended on configuration. I couldn't get a long bed TRD O/R DoubleCab with a manual, so I got the short bed.

Thanks all ... I guess I should have been more specific as it's my impression that the access cab with the V6 only is available in the AT? I 've come to like the space that comes with this cab but also don't want to go to the double cab as the bed's too short... so, the 4x4 with access cab and V6 only comes with AT, right? And, if so, I wonder what they were thinking?!?

Hmm .. maybe it's a Memphis problem as when I go to the toyota.com site and select the build a tacoma option it won't allow the V6 + Access + Manual ... if it's available as Whippersnapper02 says above, perhpas it's not in my zip? That doesn't really make sense but they as for your zip code before the build options are allowed.

Nice that you can get the OFF ROAD TRD in a manual, for those who want it!

V6 6spd 4x4 is available. Tell your dealer to locate one for you.
Some argue the manual is heavy and not all that great, and that the gearing is spaced far apart.

The plus side is the 6spd is a little faster, but gets worse MPG as the 6th gear is higher then the 5th gear in the AT. So far my manual hasn't failed me yet, and I bought it because it's 1000x more fun to drive.... in my opinion, but to each is own.

Depends where you go, but I've heard this before. My V6 4x4 Access Cab TRD Sport's a 6-speed manual though. In fact, all the 4x4s at the dealership I went to were manual if they were better than the base model. Maybe it's a regional thing? I don't know if I could have got an AT unless I special ordered it. My preference was for manual, so no problems.

I drove both the manual and the Auto. The 6 speed was with the AT was very peppy on leave a little slugish between 35 and 45,. The manual was not even fun to drive, and I love MT. I decided to buy the AT. The other poster mentioned there is a slight difference withing mileage.

I agree that they are very close.

Although not entirely proven or measured w/ the exact same truck, LSD/locker, I would say by the seat of my pants (and I drove both before purchasing) that the 6spd definitely 'felt' faster. I also dragged an auto and beat it, but that is all subjective, how many miles on the truck, mods etc.

Either way, the manual is more fun and when it comes down to driving, and actually enjoying the drive, the manual is superior. But the other side could argue, and I understand that.
