Hey guys I have had black cars all my life and am aware of the work it takes to keep a black car nice. I am thinking about getting a black trd sport and have heard the paint from the factory scratches easier than normal on other cars in black. Is this true? I also heard I can't drive it through a car wash without getting swirl marks? Is this true? I love the color black so much and want it in a Tacoma. What do you guys think? If I was just driving around town would I be able to keep the paint nice. I also heard the Tacoma black paint chips easy. Is this true also?

I very much doubt the black paint marks up any easier than any other Toyota paint. It's just that it shows easier. I would never take any car other than an old beater through an automatic wash. You will get swirl marks after just one run thru. Some paints will just show them more than other but they're there, even in the light colors. My viewpoint is I want black or another dark color not only for the beauty of the reflection and deepness of the paint but also because I *want* to see the imperfections so I can fix them.

Ps. Where are you "hearing" all this info, on this board ? hahaha

I have a 2014 gray DCLB and it shows every scratch. I think my fingernail could scratch it. I doubt the dark color scratches more, i just think is shows more.

All modern paints are pretty soft, being a different chemical composition. And most of them are applied quite thinly. (on all marquees)

I have a 2013 pyrite mica and the paint also appears to be very soft. I love the color however I am going back to white again next time.

You can sneeze and scratch Tacoma paint. Although the paint on my wife's Highlander is thicker and of higher quality, it still isn't like it used to be.

Get black, it looks great. Just no automatic washes and lots of wax/polishes. Get a good orbital buffer too.

I bought a buffer and give the clear coat a buzz once a year. Keeps it looking great! When it gets really old, I'm just gonna either rhino line or matte black the whole truck.

Buddies got a black 2013 AC sport. Truck is beautiful after a nice wax. Give it two days of rain and either summer sun or a viewing angle under parking lot lights and what you will see is horrifying. Swirl marks and if you look at it hard enough you will see scratches everywhere. I have a MGM and just from hand washing it and being stupid careful with trying to not contaminate pads and stuff, there is swirl marks. I'm going to be honest and say the paint on the truck is shit. If I'd do it again id get a silver one. I'd rarely need to wash it and doesn't show marks/scratches/etc. that being said.....buy a Tacoma. I love mine. Check my review it may help.

This is my second vehicle with Black paint (it was one of the reasons I bought it) and it does periodicly gets run through the wash-o-matic. I have noticed the water borne paints have gotten better (remember the Fords & Chevys turning to powder or the Dodges pealing off in a strong breeze) but they still don't harden like solvent based. As stated earlier the truck for me is a utility vehicle.

The sales dude tells me it's got this and that feature, Ok,... Well it increases the sales value, Ok,... What are you gonna give me when there's +200k on the clock. It'll probably end up with a matte clear before I'm done with it.

The last truck was on the mountain clearin' a path through the wild blackberry & raspberry bushes 2 weeks after I drove it off the lot. (sounded like nails on a chalk board, my buddy the paint & body guy was getting the dry heaves)

I have a 2015 black tacoma. Full of scratches! I like them however, as I off road quite a bit. If I wanted a truck to keep cherry nice, I would get a different color.

I actually heard it from a neighbor and he works for a dealership. Then I read some on here. My main concern was the swirl marks.

Well, my advice to anyone buying a vehicle with any dark paint: Either be prepared to learn to use a R/O buffer or convince yourself you don't give a damn about imperfections in the paint.

Me... I intentionally buy cars with highly reflective paint because I love the shine and reflection and I like to show off my work. And I consider using the right combination of pads/polishes and achieving outstanding results with my R/O buffer to be relaxing and rewarding work.

The paint on My wife's '07 Subaru is far superior to my '06 Taco. Then again the Subie was one of the last ones made in Japan.

I've read that Toyota non metallic paints do not have clearcoat. My mgm tacomas paint is decent, but our 15 rave with black is the worst paint I've ever seen. Spent the day today polishing and waxing it and looks ok now
