I just bought my TRD OFF ROAD last week, Awesome truck- I have a couple of issues/concerns, I have a slight ticking in the engine, sounds like a loose rocker, but since I don't think there is any rockers I don't know?? Is this normal for this engine? Also if I am driving in a lower gear and give it gas and let off and give it gas again I hear a 'clunk/clank' noise is this normal?
I just turned 800 miles on the truck, and have only owned used vehicles prior to this, and it is my thinking that these symptoms (noises) will only get worse in the future. Any ideas?
I plan on taking it back to the dealer, if not for a 'fix' at least to get the issues documented for future use. I do have the extended warrantee..

The ticking noise is normal at idle in these trucks. Not sure about the ticking in low gear though but someone will chime in.

clunking is most likely play in your U-Joints. My GF's U-Joint exploded at 30K miles after clunking when accelerating

The taco tick...normal man. Also that clunking in the trany depending when it occurs is probably normal as well. Mine makes a clunking sound that I noticed immediately after buying mine, but I've since gotten used to it. The dealer said it was normal, just the way the trany is built. Either way I would go get it checked out. Also the computer memorizes your driving style and that could be parT of the clunking sound. It's getting used to your style. There's my two cents. Good luck.

The tick is normal. This engine has solid lifters and will have some clearance in the valvetrain.

My truck has a significant amount of slop in the drivetrain. It has been that way since I got it at 40K miles and has not gotten any worse in the additional 20K I have put on it. The only other stick shift 4x4 I have owned did the same thing. An auto trans will cushion the shock and make it less noticeable I am sure.

You've got plenty of warranty time. I'd drive it and enjoy. If it gets worse take it in.

Mine has the tick and the clunk. 2,500 miles on it already. Shortly after I purchased mine I was in the parts department and he parts department manager told me that the clunk sound was normal - he mentioned this to me without me asking because his wife had experianced the same thing on there recently purchased 2011 tacoma.

Help! I've got 4000 miles(99% highway2wd) on my 12 Off Road with the 6spd and I'm getting quite a bit of clunking/chatter when I'm in 4wd going over uneven terrain(climbing in and out of some pond berms) and turning but not full lock turns. It's pretty loud and intense and doesn't sound natural. Sounds like it's coming from the cv joints. I know what a failing cv joint sounds like and it's a much "heavier" sound and slower than that. Anyone else experience this? I'm not looking forward to the hour drive each way to the dealership only to not be able to duplicate it in suburbia. I will try to post a video of it. Thanks!

It kind of sounds like a ujoint thats at an aggresive angle. The truck is stock no lift.

I have a 2009 TRD Double Cab TRD 4x4 4.0 V6 and let me tell you the clucking noise has always driven me crazy. I have been back to the dealership time and time again to get this checked out before my warranty ran out. It is still doing it, and I have just about to get used to it, however it is a little annoying. I have changed U-Joints and still the clunk. What in the heck is it and where is it coming from? It cannot be good.

    Thanks

My 2012 tacoma 4.0l Ticks as well, when its hot at idle and when reving. Its annoying as hell, and im rather annoyed by it. It only has 600 Km on it. Has anyone found out any fixes or what it is yet? I heard the evap valve causes a tick, but that shouldnt go up and down with revs.

As for your clunking you hear, I would check the Steering intermediate shaft. I know a bunch of people have taken them in for that under warranty.

Mine is more like a 'Tock' when I hear it from outside the driver side wheel well and more like a tick inside the cab after good engine warm up at idle up to around 1500rpm. maybe it's my old ears. I also hear some piston slap after a cold start then that goes away and I get the tick or tock. Piston slap on newer engines when warming up is very very common and usually a metallic raspy clanking sort of sound. I had a 3100malibu that sounded like the pistons were swapping cylinders.

I believe the Tacoma tick , at least on the 2012 v6's is the VVT-I and perhaps some valve train noise from the tension-er and guides. believe me i was concerned about the noise until I found out about the Taco tick . I've only had mine for about A WEEK AND LESS THAN 600 MILES.

Like mentioned the tick is normal... i'd worry more if i didn't hear it. The clunk sounds like driveline slop or leaf springs... Try greasing the zerks and torqueing the u bolts.

I know this OP is old, but not too outdated-
The clunk is the driveshaft yoke slipping into place in the transmission. My 2012 4X4 auto Taco does it too. (Like my 2000 Ford F-150 did exactly) The splines get a little dry and the resistance binds and slips abit. I had read somewhere this is normal? I think not. My F-150 was remedied by greasing the the spline. I have not tried to fix the Tacoma yet as I'm still in warranty and the Dealership mechanics say the clicks and clunks are normal. I remind them each time i have the oil changed to document "normal" on the invoice so warranty has a record when normal breaks.
    "Trust Me Luke"......."Use The Force"

Oh, yeah, mine ticks too,, but thats normal.....right?

Just drive it till something breaks. Chances are it won't.

Can you explain this more? Are you talking about the slip yoke of the driveshaft or something inside the tranny? Shift fork, input/lay shaft,etc...

    Yes, the driveshaft yoke.
