My 2012 Tacoma 4.0 with tow package needs new battery. I’m still running the OEM, can’t believe it’s lasted this long. With the cold weather coming on I’ve noticed a slower cranking. It’s time for a new one, but would like some advice on what to get.

I don’t tow anything but may borrow a trailer once in a blue moon to haul wood or something.

Which brand battery is good and do I need the 24- 27-34?

    Thanks !

Look at your OEM battery (or owners manual). It will say 24, 27 etc. Also it may say something like 27F. The F tells you which side the positive (+) terminal is on the battery. The OEM cables are not long enough if you get the wrong battery.

If you have doubts; go to someplace like Advanced Auto, Pep Boys. Get something with ~700 CCA that’s on sale. The house brand is generally OK, and will come with a decent warranty. Installation should be included in the purchase price. Stay away from the dealer.

I went to my local NAPA auto parts store and got the proper 27F battery that I was having trouble finding else where. I also have a 12 and changed it last year for piece of mind. Most places will give you the core charge back when you take back the old battery.

    Interstate at Costco. Under $100.

Your battery will say what it is. Or your owners manual. Or the battery chart at Costco.

If OEM lasted that long, why not get the same?

I would be extremely wary of any older info in there, specifically any info about Optima. Their quality has really tanked. 10-20yrs ago they were amazing, they were the only battery I'd buy for any of my cars and I was pretty easily getting 5-10yrs out of them. Then they changed their production and things went downhill...

You cannot buy the same batteries that came in your truck from the dealer. You'll be getting a different battery.

Not saying it isn't good, but it's not the same.

Recently replaced mine. Die Hard from Advance Auto. Just can’t see dropping the motherload on a battery.

I have had the best luck with the Duralast Gold from Autozone, made by Johnson Controls.

Auto Zone Duralast gold, run them in all 4 of my vehicles, decent warranty that they honor. Plus they,ll test yours, and install it, smear diaelectric gel , and put on felt post washers at no added cost. Warranty is nationwide.

Perhaps not. The one I pulled was a True Start and that's what I replaced with. Both 27F. New one with 84 month warranty.

Put me in the line at Costco for an Interstate too. The auto parts stores make bank off of their batteries.

You pay a premium for the sticker that says Interstate Batteries. Interstate is not a battery manufacturer - they are a marketing and distribution company. Their batteries are made by Johnson Controls or Exide (depending on the model). I BELIEVE Johnson Controls also make the Everstart Maxx line for Walmart as well (though haven't really dug into it).

Interstate, no thanks the warranty procedure thing is not for me. I have been buying the top of the line from Walmart, warranty at any Walmart. But the OEM is made by Johnson Controls and appears to be a darn good one.
