This is my 3rd Tacoma and I've owned a couple 4th gen 4Runners with the same engine and this is the first time I've experienced this. In the mornings when I'm heading to work after I crank the engine over and give it a little gas the engine sounds like a chopper. Kind of like the flutter sound from the blades. I can drive for a few minutes with this sound present until it warms up and smoothes out. I only have 1000 miles on the rig, but noticed it the 2nd day I brought it home. Guess I figured it was breaking in still and would be temporary. It's not super loud, but very noticeably annoying. Makes my $35k truck sound like sh*t.

Anyone else have this problem? If so, did it get better? I'm calling Toyota today to have them take a look and hopefully keep it over night so they can recreate the noise in the morning.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Sounds like it may have an exhaust leak or possibly an intake leak. Pop the hood with it running and you should be able to pinpoint it.

A video would be beneficial. My truck revs up when I first start it for 5-10 seconds.

I'm wondering if it could be something related to the ridiculous air injection pump which is new on the '12s.

I'll see if I can remember to grab a video tomorrow morning. Its not the first 5-10 second rev that we all have; I'll have to capture it tomorrow to diagnose further.

This is exactly what I'm thinking.

I thought the same thing since it sounds like my airbox wasn't on correctly, I checked yesterday and all was good.

I just bought a new 2012 last week. Mine seems load in the morning or when the motor is cold reminds me of a clutch fan. It's still not as load as my Ford 6.0 I just sold.

Engine fan clutch assembly. This is entirely Normal. It locks up after it warms up due to thermal spring.

Either the fan clutch or the air injection pump...the fan clutch is loud and sounds like a big rig fan and the injection pump is high pitched and makes people in the parking garage look at me like something is wrong with my truck...

Mine 2012 dclb sounds like a diesel tractor when I start it in the morning. Bringing it in next week. Also once in awhile it takes about 10 seconds to start. Only 1128 miles and already problems:(

Since the air injection pump is electric, you can run it in isolation by turning the key to "on" but don't start the engine. This way you'll know if the sound you hear is from the air pump.
