    Excuse the noob questions. What are the limiting factors F1 puts on the cars? Do they restrict them at all ie: restrictor plate Nascar. Is it expected than any car can win on any day or are the lower end teams just not competitive?

    No restrictor plates .

    Unlike in NASCAR , where top speed is all there is , in F1 , the cars are constantly braking , then accelerating back up to speed , so the teams set up the car as a compromise between all out speed and grip / acceleration through and off the corners .

    What about when Webber and Vettal toke each other out 2 summers ago? And the times Hamilton and Jenson have almost taken each other out? Its more important for the constructors to have both driver finish every race in the top 5 so they get the constructors cup. When drivers take each other out the constructors loose points.

    I guess you could say the size of the engine is a restriction. Here is some engine differences from a web site.




    The Formula One engine is a purpose-built, pure race engine, in a 90 degree V8 configuration, with 2.4 liters (146.4 cubic inches) displacement. It weighs at a minimum of 209 lbs.

    > The NASCAR Cup engine is also a V8, supposedly production-based, and restricted to 5.86 liter (358 cubic-inch) displacement. It weighs in at approximately 575 lbs.

    > The Formula One engine is designed to go roughly 840 miles.

    > The NASCAR Cup engine is designed to go 800 miles, more or less.

    > The Formula One engine puts out about 755 bhp, at upwards of 20,000 rpm.

    > The NASCAR Cup engine puts out around 820 bhp at a much lower 9000 rpm.

    > The Formula One engine is a DOHC design, with four-valve-per-cylinder layout and has finger-followers and pneumatic valvesprings. The ignition and fuel injection systems are controlled by a sophisticated engine-management digital computer system.

    > The NASCAR Cup engine has two valves per cylinder using steel helical valvesprings, a single four barrel carburetor based on a specified Holley model and a single, distributor-controlled ignition.

    Those are specs , not restrictions like restrictor plates in NASCAR , where a restriction is added to the spec engine .

    Keep in mind , the teams' portion of the profits from the F1 season is in part tied to their finishing position in the Constructor's Championship

    This part needs updating. NASCAR has switched to EFI this season.

    Single throttle body with McLaren (yes the same Mclaren) built ECU. Also eight injectors and eight coils. So I guess they're getting more similar. It's a shame that NASCAR isn't seizing on the PR possibilities with this change. It's all Danica, Danica, Danica, blah blah blah. Another reason why my interest is down this year.

    NASCAR is switching over to EFI engines

    The only reason they have the resticter plates is to keep speeds down at the super speedways like Talledega and Daytona. A brick going around a 2.5 mile track at 220+ mph isn't the greatest thing.
