I was driving down the road, get up to an intersection then out of nowhere all dash lights come on, engine dies and leaves me stuck at the front of a red light.

V6 BTW, 50K. Within the last 500 miles I had the check engine light come on which was the P0171 lean code and the "Trac off." I had to keep driving it to work, so I would take it easy on revving it high. Refilled with gas when it was near empty and the problem went away on its own, all resumed normal so I dismissed it and chalked it up to bad gas which I ended up burning through. From Chevron at that. Fast forward to now. Stuck at a red light, attempting to crank and nothing, yet it sounded like it was starved for fuel. There was two instances where it almost caught and turned on but stopped catching and just kept cranking. New AGM battery, strong cranks. What's the general consensus here? Fuel pump gone bad? If so I'm going to be fairly disappointed in the quality of Toyota.

As for the other suggestions, is there a fuel cut off relay? Where is that located? Also, is there an access port to check for fuel pressure? If so where is that located? I am stuck at work so all suggestions I will have to go on will have to wait until I wake tomorrow disgracefully. If it is the fuel pump, I forsee a Walbro 255 in short order here. Like next day air shipped from URD. Lol. I can't be down a daily.

It does sound like a fuel pump. Good luck on the repair.

Just the fact that i'm sitting here wasting diagnostic time at work right now to confirm 100% that it is the pump is really irritating me.

I should also add that I used to get a lot of pinging and knocking, regardless of what octane gas I would throw into the truck for the longest time. Also, sometime in between from start of ownership to now I had a couple instances where the truck would hesitate to start up when cold. Fuel pressure failing to sufficiently build to proper PSI from a faulty fuel pump?

Confirmed. Dead fuel pump. All electrical/ fuses intact and working, as well as relays. No fuel being sent from fuel lines to the rail, yes even at cranking when the fuel delivery begins.

Hopped on the phone and talked to one of our shop suppliers. Get this, at some point Toyota decided to switch their fuel pump assembly manufacturers and the ones who make it is Delphi. Denso is no longer the supplier for their pumps. No wonder the piece of duece died early. As of 2014 (last year) the particular supplier we use for parts has sold over 104 fuel pump assemblies for our 2nd gens. 19 of those were sent back again as a warranty.

I opted for something which would be better manufactured and offered longevity instead of replacing with the same brand which failed me very quickly, so I went and picked up a Walbro 255lph fuel pump. I needed it by tomorrow and unfortunately Gadget over at URD already had his shipments picked up through Fedex so I was forced to search elsewhere. More to come.

That's good-to-know info. So the Denso pumps are made in Japan (AFAIK) and the Delphi made in the US. Delphi was a sub of GM that they spun off back in the 90s. They still make parts for the parent company but are independent now of GM. Delco products are "buyer beware" these days. Delphi was (is) the classic perfect storm of bad management, legacy union labor, and this so-called "free-trade." What has been left behind are empty crumbling buildings in the U.S. and "Made In China" labels on the back of Delphi products.

Toyota, WHY did you choose to do this? Cost cutting?

OP: was the pump not under warranty?

Pump is under warranty still. I have another 10K left on the power train warranty, but honestly why would I even bother letting the dealer put their dirty grubby paws on my truck and end up replacing the crap pump with another crap pump which should prove to crap out shortly thereafter? I don't trust delphi to this day and for good reason. Had I had known that Toyota cheaped out and went with this crap tactic company to supply the fuel pumps for them, I would had bought a replacement pump and taken care of this a long long time ago. Or at least been prepared and had one on hand.

The pump is held in suspension of fluid while the truck is driven in any sort of situation. The gas also helps isolate the pump and absorb any sort of unwanted vibration or bumps that the pump would otherwise not like. I'm very doubtful of that. Delphi has a known track record of being shit. Please don't come in here trying to defend that because we both know that it is. Lol.

The pump I am looking at should look something like this:

The one you sent me looks nothing like that one above. ^

never run a car to near empty gas tank always refill at 1/4 tank the gas in the tank actually cools the fuel pump if not it will over heat it and fail. I found out the hard way myself with a 95 Toyota truck I was always running it dry. FYI get a DENSO replacement>rockauto.com

A lot of the HVAC parts in the Taco were made by Delphi in the beginning, probably a strategic decision since the truck was assembled at NUMMI. Gradually as problems developed (e.g. burning fan resistor) they are replaced with Denso parts. I had no idea Toyota went the other direction with fuel pumps.

I have been looking for a suitable Denso replacement but can't seem to find one that has flow rate information available for it. I would like one similar in specs to the Walbro 255 but the one I have found is quite a bit larger then the Walbro and I know that one pushes the limits of the stock fuel pump bracket/container and assembly as it is.

Ahh Yes that's right! That would explain the Chevy S-10 style resistor connector harnesses that everyone's trucks has! Yeah, knowing what I know about this truck at this point. I can say without a doubt on my mind that the old saying "OEM is garbage" is fairly safe to apply to this situation as well. Rightfully so, seeing that the saying came from the american car crowd, and a decent amount of the parts on this car are carryover american. Lol.

Speaking of which, I have a very slow AC leak at my condenser that has been developing for the last 15-20K for no reason. Wonder if those parts are american as well.

99.89, exactly the same part number and everything as the one you sent me. That thing looks way different to a standard looking fuel pump, which I know the 1st gen uses. I was contemplating picking up a 1st gen Denso fuel pump, but I don't know it's flow rate neither in GPH or LPH.

I recently bought a new fuel pump DENSO for my 04 from Rockauto.com was exactly the same as the original I removed at 245k miles and was still going. Just follow the directions on vehicle infos and your good to go
