    That looks like the switch from a 4th gen (03-09) v6 4Runner.

The v8 4runners are fulltime 4wd, so that switch will not work for a Tacoma.

Good to know. Thanks for the info. Now I can hunt for the right switch at the junkyard.

Crap, I just bought a switch ( I believe originally came from www.Tacoma4x4.com ) that I was going to install on my 2012. I bought it off another member (never used)
I see now that it will not work huh?

if you still have that 4x4 switch from that other person- you can make it work (maybe)
i bought two and one was from a v6 and one was from a v8- the difference is that there is a plastic tab inside the switch knob which prevents it from going to the 4lo position as well as there is no 4lo indicator, that, and there are two diodes soldered on the back of the v6 switch- i'll try to take a pic so you can see
should be simple as trimming the knob and soldering the new parts to the back
    good luck

Does anyone have an update to the install instructions posted by the OP? He hasn't been on since Jun 2013 and the link he posted is dead.

Actually, I got it to work. Wired it up using the two pigtails that came with the 4Runner switch for use in my 2013. Works like a charm!. Not as nice as the LED kit for the 2011 and earlier, but good none the less.
