2012 newbie Frame recall question

Just purchased a new to me 2012 4.0 Tacoma with 94,000 miles on it. I’ve been doing a little research on frame recall and I’m a little nervous to be honest. Truck is in decent shape and frame looks like it does have some type of black undercoating on it.

Previous owner told me this trucks frame recall is good till 2024 (12 years). He mentioned that they will inspect it one time? Before I go see me dealer and ask questions I’m hoping to get educated here on the forum with what I’m up against. Will I receive any type of paper work on frame now that I’m the new owner?

I would stop into your dealer with the VIN and have them look it up and see if it was inspected and if it needs to be.
The "recall" service campaign, is only good if the frame was actually inspected.

 

Mine was inspected twice . First dealer wanted to coat the frame . Second dealer replaced the frame . All within a years time .

 

The ‘11-‘17 warranty extension strictly states that in order to qualify for a free frame you must have their CRC treatment done within the 1st 2 years of the warranty extension period. There is still time for you to get that done, if it hasn’t been done, but the clock is ticking.

In the future there are going to be a lot of Tacoma owners crying the blues. They buy a used Taco. A few years later, the frame gets a big rust hole in it. They take it to the dealer and the dealer tells them, “You need a frame but you’re going to have to pay for it because the frame was never CRC treated.”

 

Stopped by the dealer this morning. I was told I have until 2024 to get my free inspection from Toyota on the frame recall. I can refuse the CRC treatment if I want, I don’t have to accept it. If my frame goes bad before 2024 it will get replaced for free. He also told me in his opinion don’t get the frame inspected until closer to 2024. He said the frame treatment is more like a wax in the prime areas and cracks where the frame is known to go bad.

In New York State we have to have our vehicles inspected every year and the frame is part of the inspection. So whoever I take it to will look the frame over and I will make sure to stress that when I take it in.

Is he wrong or just feeding me bullshit?

 

He is wrong and if you listen to him, it will be a VERY expensive mistake for you. He won’t be the one approving/denying your frame replacement years down the road. Toyota corporate makes the decision and there is no changing their mind.

 

So, should I make that appointment for my CRC treatment and frame inspection? Again, my truck is a 2012.

Be proactive to protect your investment. Rinse undercarriage with freshwater and apply Fluid Film or Wool Wax Spring and fall.

The CRC treatment that the dealer does is white goopy stuff that they squirt inside the frame. Only time will tell if it does any good, but if you don’t get it done, you don’t get a free frame years later. The WEP is very clear on that. They even make it red text on the notice.

When I bought my 2013 new, my Toyota dealer undercoated the frame (extra). Over the years, it got fluid filmed. Had inspection in Nov 19 now having CRC done tomorrow. Definitely get the inspection especially if qualify.
