I noticed today as I prepare for my 1st oil change (I'm at 1000K miles and ready to switch over to syn)...

the oil filter on my 2012 Tacoma from the factory is:
    90915-20004

compared to a few I have that are:
    90915-YZZD3

    are these the same?

they look the same. both have "Denso" on them (I guess a brand)
the factory (20004) filter is made in Japan
the off the dealer shelf (YZZD3) filter is made in Thailand

thanks for any help/info you can share.

The 20004 comes from the factory, and I can only speculate that its used as a break in filter. All the replacements are the YZZD3.

Your 2010 most likely had the 20004 from the factory, too.

I switched to synthetic at just over 1,000 miles. I noticed the difference in part numbers too.

    probably correct.

I just removed it and replaced it. I'm more aware of Tacoma stuff now, because of this forum.

    Yup.

The filter media is "blocky" and looks like some kind of fibrous material.
Really strange design. Chris has a picture of the YZZD3 around somewhere. Here's the 20004

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I would run conventional oil for the first 3,000 or so miles to allow the engine to break in nicely then switch over. Around 7,000 I'd switch out the diff to syn.

Would be interesting to rip one open and compare it to K&N/Mobil-1.

    stuff...
The 20004as a different filter media, and was first used on lexus v8s. In America the part number is superceded with the yzzd3, so dealerships can't get them in for you. The 20004 is supposed to be a better filter for filtration and flow. They are supposedly still available overseas, but I could not find any. The supra guys swear by these filters. Toyota claims theat the yzzd3 will do the job so don't even worry about it.
