That same exact thing happened to my HHR and there is TSB covering that issue about rocks hitting the radiator on the 06-08 models and had a rock guard for them for upgrade and cost to the owner. But I now longer have that car and I feel bad for the next owner of it. Now I know I was not the only guy who thought a magic rock on the road can do this and happened to them. I knew it was going to cost more than a grand to fix the HHR and got the Tacoma instead.

What's funny is I've seen so many cars with dented radiator fins. They are so thin you can dent them by trying to spray the dead bugs off of them with a hose. I didn't realize a dented fin will make it leak, especially because in this pic if you look THROUGH the fins you can see the lawn.

The fins cool the tubes that the coolant flows through, coolant doesn't flow through the fins.

Well that's my point. I don't see how it can leak because of bent fins.

Do those wider horizontal ribs (between the very thin vertical fins) carry the "cooling juice" ?? ...

If so, it looks like several were hit and one of those could be punctured & leaking ...

    "engine coolant"

Yes. The purpose of the fins is to increase the amount of surface area the heat can radiate through. They carry no fluid.

Yep, the fins are too thin, but do the wider "horizontal ribs" carry any "cooling juice" ...

Yes. The heat radiates out the horizontal tubes and into the cooling fins, which is then transferred to the air.

The "cooling juice" is called "engine coolant".

PS ... They are good memories, but I tended to drive him crazy. ...

The fins bent, but the tube has a hole as well. That tube could easily be repaired and replacing the entire radiator was overkill.

Best time I can remember with an IP was when he looked at me with disgust and stated "When you pull that thing back the houses get smaller, push it forward and they get bigger. You on my frequency?" Pretty sure that he addressed me with titles that would make that would make hippies cry the entire time but he was absolutely the best I ever had.

My civilian IP was average ... but my military IP was fantastic.

My military IP said to me . . .
    . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . "Don't let some g**k with a 5 cent bullet take away all the money that Uncle Sam has invested in you boy. ...

Can you solder aluminum? I know it takes a bad ass welder to weld up a thin piece of aluminum.

Brand new truck in the shop undergoing an engine rebuild.......a brand new radiator seems appropriate. :(

You can certain "types" of aluminum. Some doesn't weld at all, and other alloys weld up great.
