Yeah, time will tell. I did a search on 2005 tacoma concept to see what was online prior to the second gen showing up. They did release the x-runner concept at the Chicago auto show in Feb 2004. I wasnt able to see anything about 4x4 or pre-runner versions in concept form prior to the second gen coming out. I also tried to find spy shots or autoshow updates for when they changed the front end on the 2001 tacoma. no luck...so maybe its not what toyota would do since this isnt a complete redesign?

The 2010 4runner had a very quite intro for a complete redesign. A state fair in Texas. No Big auto show. How many "Spy Shots" were there? Maybe Not wanting any competition or lack there of a view of the redesigned Taco. Maybe the Entune is Toyota's 1st clue as what the 2012 Taco's direction will be. And yes any "Dealer" will lie and tell U they have NO clue about a redesign everytime. They want to sell there Now inventory and Not tell U about something they don't have. And yes they have already seen what it is going to look like but play dumb as Hell..

What we need are some forum members in San Antonio, TX hanging out near the plant with binoculars and a telephoto lens.
The first 2012 models should be rolling out of there in a couple months, if not sooner.

Wouldn't people be talking about this more? I've been following the 3rd gen / 2012 threads fairly closely and haven't seen anything like you said posted here.

I agree. I ride my bike by there 3 times a week and there is very little going on there. They are on minimum workforce right now and most employess are at home, cleaning the machines, or doing community service.

I'd hate to buy a 2011 and then discover that the 2012 had a better mpg V6. Otherwise, they're fine the way they are.

I agree. if they put the 4Runner 4.0 in it I would be pretty happy. I would be happy with a few other thing too like auto rear window and Radiant red comming back, but I woud e happy with just the upgraded 4.0.

Just read an article...a legit article(http://www.mysanantonio.com/business/article/Toyota-sees-woes-rest-of-the-year-1349162.php), talking about the woes of Toyota. I don't think the Tsunami would affect the Tacoma production that much since they are built in San Antonio. there may be a few part issues that are produced in Japan but I don't think it's affected that much. Cars like the Prius and others made in Japan can easily be seen to why production is slow from the Tsunami. With the "Redesign," I don't see how designing and planning for a new truck can suddenly be changed due to a natural disaster in a country not assembling the vehicle a few months before the "planned" release. What I'm getting at I guess is that if there is no redesign in 2012...It probably wasn't planned to be released in 2012. If it was the companies plan to release a new Tacoma, it will be released even after the Tsunami. The show must go on this close to 2012. All the money and research has been spent on the proposed release. If it was planned to come out, it will regardless. If not, it was not planned to be changed. We shall see, but I still want a better 4.0 and I don't care about more expensive oil changes.

The 2012 will have sheet metal changes and an engine change, will be out in the fall or shortly thereafter. Already confirmed from someone at Toyota corporate. Too bad the guy who puts doors on nixed it... lol.

This seems the most believable. I doubt a major redesign is coming for 2012. We would have seen spy shots or something at one of the major car shows by now.

I guess the big ? is it a "Platform" change. Would it be worth investing in minor cosmetic changes for a few years or after a 7 year run stay on target and do the newer 4runner platform and make the truck all new?

For one, companies need to continually update their products, especially cars. You could make that argument about almost any successful car, yet companies continually update them - looks change, technology changes, tastes change, expectations change, etc. Each manufacturer raises the bar, and you have to keep up. I for one wished I could get a very utilitarian hilux diesel here, or a utilitarian land cruiser...

Guys, I don't believe the 5th generation 4Runner (updated for model year 2010) is a different platform than the current Tacoma. The 5th Generation 4 Runner was a sheet metal and interior change with an updated engine (4.0 V6 single VVT-I changed to Dual VVT-I) not a platform change.

I'm guessing you're correct - that would be consistent with what I've heard from within Toyota as well. I'm looking forward to seeing it... and probably buying one!
