I'm starting to think that the brochure is accurate in saying that A-TRAC is standard on all models. TRAC was automatically a part of VSC so maybe A-TRAC is now the standard for all. All models have the LSD and VSC.

    We shall see........

The brochure had it standard on the base 4x2 models as well IIRC , I think it's a typo

Sport or Sport Upgrade package? $700 difference. Either way you did about as good as you're going to. I'm getting mine for about 33.5K+tax/fees but with sport upgrade package instead of just sport, 4x4 instead of 2 wheel, and short bed instead of long.

No offense to anyone, but I still don't understand why they even have a Pre-Runner unless your truck never sees anything but highway and traffic lights and you want to appear to have 4 wheel drive. Maybe I'm missing something.

True, but TRAC was available on all even 4x2 so maybe its not just a 4L thing anymore.

    Who knows.

Meh. Pre Runners are 4x4 wannabes. All about "the look". But still good utility transportation!

If it were about the look, we'd all take off the PreRunner badges and add some 4x4 mudflaps - I have yet to see any PreRunner owners do that, though. :D

I got the PreRunner because I don't need 4x4 given that my truck only sees pavement - I'd rather have the couple grand in my bank rather than in a diff and a switch that I'd never use.

Plus, with the TRD packages, it doesn't matter whether it's a PreRunner or not...it's going to look the same.

Nope. Toyota didn't need to lift the PreRunner to look like the 4x4. They did it because their marketing people know men like the more lifted "look". I would be willing to bet you that if the PreRunner was lower than the 4x4 their sales would tank. Toyota, smartly, knows this.

In all fairness, I'd have to say that in the two years I had my OR 4x4 I never once used the locker or the A-TRAC........and I'm from WV. I just liked the stiffer suspension of the OR. When I traded it in I realized I had never even pressed the button.....lol.

But I did use the 4 wheel drive quite a few times.

And the 2 wheel drive Tacomas are some of the ugliest vehicles (not just trucks) on the road. If I had to choose between Pre-Runner vs. plain 2 wheel drive, I'd choose Pre-Runner.

I've seen one or two in parking lots here, but dealers don't seem to stock them at all.

    Just the basics
As far as the prerunner topic goes, when I was in high school during the late 80s the only Toyota trucks that were lifted were the 4x4 versions. Lots, and I do mean lots, of people could only afford a 2x4 and then somehow found the money to lift them. You could always tell the 80s truck differences due to fenders/lockers. I had a 90 pickup that I got a slight suspension lift for primarily cause I liked the look. My next truck, a 99 Tacoma did have 4x4 but didn't get used much. My 09 gets used all the time.

Off road racing teams would use 2x4s to "pre run" a race course to get a feel for a course. In my opinion Toyota took far too long in offering a factory made "prerunner" version. I don't want or need a prerunner but I'm glad the option is there for those who do. They are quite capable with the OR version due to having a rear locker. 4Runners had a 2x4 version with the 2nd gens and even the FJC has a pre runner version.

Is this true? I am deciding between 4x4 TRD OR and Sport... i havent had time to go test drive them back to back yet. I thought the sport tuned was tighter than the more spongy OR. nearly all of my driving will be on road, but a few trips a year OR makes me need 4x4. plus, seasonal crap weather... and definitely a macho thing :)

    also... a 4x2 OR? oxymoron?

So I went to a dealership in the greatest city in the world, Columbia, South Carolina (giant load of sarcasm right there) to ask the service department some questions (another load of sarcasm and a different story there). When I was leaving I stopped and looked at their "inventory" of about 6 Tacomas hoping I would find a 2012 chilling on the lot but all they had were 2011s. the stickers they had on the windows said "2011."
Now on to my question, the front end of the 2011s look surprising similar to the 2012s, did they redesign the front end of the 2012s or were these 2011s actually 2012s?
