I think the real reason that the new engines will be delayed is because the Tacoma is already the segment leader in the mid-size class and that Toyota wants to focus on the redesinged 2013 or 2014 Tundra. When the new Tundra is announced with "ALL-NEW engines and design" the V6 will filter down to the Tacoma soon after. If a new engine was lets say put in the Tacoma first then announced for the new Tundra at a later date this may steal some of the excitement Toyota wants to generate for an all new Tundra. I think something similar to Ford's Eco-boost V6 will come out for the Tundra when redesigned.......?

with modern manufacturing processes - not really an issue. it's a very different world today, this attitude is a carryover from more manual processes of years past.

I'm trying to find out a few things - for one why they changed their mind this late in the game on the engine change (if it's even true), and when they're expecting to start using the new engine. i have a feeling the Japanese disaster had something to do with it - that or price points. not sure if i'll get a response, but all i can do is try... i'm personally going to wait for the new engine if it's scheduled by 2013 model, probably not if it's longer.

i love the comment someone left after the wsj article...

"I would drive my Dodge 2500 4×4 off a cliff to get my hands on a Toyota diesel 4×4"

i'm sorry but, if toyota makes their engines in mexico that will be the end of the brand loyalty for me sorry.

they need to make a diesel similar but, more refined and powerful than they have in europe a high quality high torque clean burning diesel engine would redefine the whole segment in our country.

it could tow way more it's fuel economy could potentially be stellar and it would be absolutely awesome off road plus have the built in toughness and reliability that the brand is known for. i would also imagine that instead of completely starting from scratch they could work off of the platform they have already in service and just throw technology at and refine it to produce a truley stellar mill for the most popular medium sized truck in america. this segment will grow in the very near future due to rising gas prices and peak oil coming in the next 10 to 15 years.

they also need to redo the shitty 5 speed in the regular cab it has inherent flaws that are quite apparent such as the throw out bearing issue and the realization by many owners that the clutch is the most awful feeling clutch ever!

i don't care if anyone says they will never do this.. they would sell more truck lets face it plus we could all benefit from the gas savings and the new generation of diesel technology. most people who buy toyota tacomas keep the truck for the long haul this could also act as a terrific selling point as diesels tend to run forever when designed correctly.

The only problem I see is how do you know how accurate info for a 2013 engine change is if we don't know the accuracy of the 2012 info this late in the game? I know my '96
standard cab can hold on a few more years, but I don't think I can. I need the room and 4x4 now.

As a jeep owner (99 TJ) I wasn't too thrilled to see them put a more efficient minivan engine in jeeps. Power curve really not ideal for what jeeps do (well, unless you keep your jeep on the pavement),

i was under the impression that they only do some assembly in mexico.

i also thought the engines where put together either in the us. canada or japan correct me if i'm wrong here. or maybe i'm thinking of parts content idk.

it just does not jive with me to have my engine assembled in mexico if mine now was assembled there i sure didn't know that when i went to buy it.

Lets put it this way, your truck is like a hot dog.... you think its meat.... you like it..... but its a mystery how its made and it should stay that way...

I work for the Toyota / Ford dealer and yes your truck was made in mexico, but it could be worse.... it could be a gmc.

I am talking about the changes made recently.. Changes made to the interior while keeping the same minivan engine and now they come out with the same Wrangler but with an new sweet engine ( what 290hp and significant better torque while improving mpg), and a 5-speed auto!

Looks like Toyota is doing the same, change cosmetics and wait a few years to drop in the new engine and tranny...
