    My 2012 DCLB V6 has 5k miles
Now and pings with regular gas (87)

It has been doing this since day 1....

Mostly low rpm"s when I take off
Slow or with the A/C or heater on...

I find myself taking off faster so it won't ping....

Friends say to buy "89" octane but this is a new truck with only 235hp...

I don't feel I should have to buy more expensive gas to stop the ping.....any suggestions?

Try a different brand of gasoline. Or have the dealer check the knock sensor, that is supposed to adjust the timing when a knock is detected.

Try a higher octane and see if it goes away. These engines do have a higher compression ratio of 10:1 which can lead to pre detonatio. Maybe try a different gas station.

Def a ping.....I'm aware if the "Tick"...

I did try a tank of 91 and it went away but my truck gets pretty shitty mileage and I would like to avoid the more expensive gas if possible....

I'll take it in an have them check the knock sensor...thanks

It kind of makes no sense taking off faster that should make it ping more you should not hear it ping take it to the dealer.

burn a few tanks of high octance fuel. See if your milage improves over the lower octane. Mine did when the cost per mile is calculated sometimes it can actually be cheaper buying high octane because you get more miles. just fyi

Try switching to Chevron or throw a bottle of the Techron gas additive in once in a while. I've used both since day one and have never heard a noticable ping or tick.

My truck pings something fierce on 87 octane if it's crappy gas. I honestly don't know how it didn't start shooting off CELs one tank I had back in '10. I thought I had burnt a plug electrode clean off. More normal 87 doesn't cause that kind of problem but I do tend to lose timing across the board if I run it. Ignition advance is slot E on the Ultra-gauge so I see it all the time.

Mileage usually improves just enough with premium that it's neither less nor more expensive to run it in my truck.

Remember back in '05 this motor was premium fuel only. Then in '06 Toyota said regular grade won't mess it up... much... and you only lose 3 hp / 12 lb-ft.

Ever since I got my 2013 I run at least 89 octane. I recorded better fuel consumption on my 2011 after switching to the higher octane. Haven't noticed a ping or even the tick on the new truck.

    Appreciate the feedback....

I have tried a tank of 91 and it ran great and did get better mpg...

Just thought a brand new V6 especially from Toyota with low HP would be fine with any fuel I use....

So you guys suggest I just run higher octane instead of taking it to the stealership and telling them I don't think it should Ping with any octane gas I use?

I'd run with at least 89 octane and call it good. My dad's old 4.0L he sold a couple years ago was the same way as well. The auto tranny wanted to lug the engine as much as possible and on regular fuel it misbehaved all the time. On premium it was as smooth as a sewing machine but with an annoying tick in the background ;)

There isn't much the dealer can do anyways. The fuel, ignition, and cam timing is electronically controlled, and you have a new engine, so no point in blaming carbon buildup.

236 hp or not, it's still 10:1 compression, although nowadays that's not saying much.

Mine runs like a raped ape on 85 and up. Take it to the dealer, have a tech ride with you, show him, have them fix it.

I thought this motor was rated as "89 recommended"? So I imagine the dealer might just tell you you should be running a higher octane. Doesn't hurt to have them check it out though.
