2012 Tacoma Won't Start

Ok went out this morning to start the truck for work and boom, nothing. All electronics work, no clicking at all. Just turning the key to start and nothing happens. I'm guessing this is the starter that needs to be replaced but can't believe on a 2012 truck it's gone bad so fast.

Anyone else have this problem? Thoughts???

Are you out of warranty already? Do you have an aftermarket alarm?

 

Battery or bad connection. Do a load test on the battery.

 

When you turn the key to start do all the lights on dash and electronics go out?

If so it is a battery or connection issue.

If all lights and electronics stay the same while trying to crank the engine then there is a different problem.

 

No aftermarket alarm, the truck is completely stock. I'll have to check in warranty, but would simply rather do work myself if easy than have is towed out of my driveway.

I'll check the batter with a voltmeter to see.

 

When turning the key, no sound at all but all dashboard lights turn on, everything lights up inside as usual. Just no crank or clicking.

 

Just a thought and i know this is a bit barbaric but crawl under it find the starter and tap on it with something. You can actually access it from right above the driver side upper control arm as well. Lightly tap on it dont get carried away. Careful not to hit the connector on the side. Possibly have some one hold the key as if trying to start it while you do this. Your just testing to see if the selenoid is possibly stuck, tapping on it could possibly free it.

 

Try to pull the wires off the battery terminals, if they are loose the truck won't start but the dash lights will come on (sometimes).

 

Dosent really sound like a battery issue if lights dont dim or go out. I could be wrong, just trying to help you out!

Have you tried to start the truck in neutral ? could be an issue with the PRNDL switch .

 

Well from the description there is a lot of variables.

So I got back from work after taking another car, did a load test on battery and turned out one cell was dead. Car would start being jumped, but put in new Duralast Gold battery tonight and she's back and running. My first start with the new battery she fired up and then just died out right away which has me worried. I've started and turned it off multiple times since throughout the night and everything has worked fine so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

For good measures also tapped the starter a bit.

Can't thank you all enough. Really crappy thing to deal with at 5:45am but oh well that's life.

 

That is normal as the ECU was reset after the old battery was disconnected. It will take a few days for it to relearn the parameters again. Usually the first restart after a battery disconnect it will die sometimes more than once.
