So I noticed after a 4hr drive today that my 88k mile, 2012 Trd sport 4wd DCSB would not stop smoking and emitting even more when I pressed the accelerator. Note, it is an average of 1-3 degrees; however, all the other vehicles on the road did not have smoke coming from their tail pipes. Upon reaching my destination, I realized there was frost built up around the tailpipe section of the lower quarter panel and near the bumper, which led me to believe it may have been a vast amount of water being emitted. Would this mean head gaskets? Is this normal?

Also, upon letting off the accelerator while driving, I started hearing a whining sound. Not every time, but usually at 60mph to 30mph. Would this be a faulty steering pump or low fluid? Unfortunately, I won’t be able to do anything about it (unless detrimental), until I get home tomorrow evening, but I wanted to get a frame of reference as I still have a bumper to bumper warranty.

    Thanks!!

Completely normal when cold...90% of the combustion product is water vapour.

Are you familiar with really cold weather?
I believe you're over-thinking this. Your truck is fine

I’m from NC and have only been up in northern Minnesota since August. I guess I was concerned when watching other vehicles on the highway and seeing that even at operating temps, 4hrs of driving, I’ve still got “smoke” coming from the tailpipe.

Any advice on the whining? My guess is a idler bearing or pulley...? I still have a bumper to bumper warranty so I plan on taking it to Toyota next week.

Let them have a look at it for sure. In the cold vehicles make all sorts of noises....normal...but have a look.

NC is much different in winter than MN. You won't be pleased...o_O

Power steering pumps love to whine when they're cold.

Oh I’m quickly realizing this. I’m in northern Minnesota too, but it’s really not too bad. It’s the wind and the below zero temps that get me. Haha

Yeah, I’m used to streams and rivers in the Appalachian mountains as well as blue water ocean fishing but that’s what I hear. The county I live in has 1000 lakes alone. I actually came up here for an engineering position and love being away from the traffic of Charlotte, but miss the weather, family/friends as well as the mountains and availability of restaurants and other items.

def getting a rod and basic stuff soon but a lot of my friends have pop ups and ice castles so I don’t see a need to invest a ton in it. Wouldn’t mind getting into spearing.

Smoke is only from oil burning. It will be a grey/blue color. If what comes out is white like a cloud, its water vapor (steam), not smoke.

Note that if you spew out all your coolant, it can still overheat in the extreme cold. So if you're worried about it, keep a close eye on the temperature.

you’re right it’s not “smoke,” so forgive me for confusing anyone with jargon; however, temperature has never risen past halfway. I was just overly concerned with the amount of “vapor” that was being expelled but maybe I am overreacting.
