Has anyone had success in getting the noise/timing problem resolved with a Toyota dealer/service department?

I have 2012 v6 Tacoma with the same exact noise.

I don't think it is much of a problem. as I stated before, I can make my manual trans truck ping, the autos should not so much as they should downshift. these motors apparently have stout lower ends as Toyota designed them to run like this, and so far they have been doing it well

I am pretty sure it's knocking. I noticed it going up hill on the freeway today. I have a manual and it is worse at the lower rpms. When I am flooring it going up hill. Maybe it's the gas mixture during summer time that causes it to knock more. But my car is a 2013 with 10000 miles on it so I was surprised this happened. Newer cars should not have this issue especially when it was rated at 87.

However to clarify I did not have to floor the gas pedal while going up hill. When I let off on the gas it was fine. I just couldn't accelerate as fast as normal.

Yea I was running regular. Switched it up to 91 yesterday and it wasn't knocking as bad. But for the most part went away. Maybe the higher summer temps and the summer gas mixture affects the way it burns. I live in Cali so I know they do all sorts of stuff to the gas here.

I also have a 2012 tacoma 4x4 and also pings at 1500 rpm's. I've tried premium gas with no results. I've taken to dealer 3 times and they give me a free rental every time, with no solutions. I just dropped it off today again and if they still give me the run around I think I will have a meeting with the general manager.
I've had 10 yes 10 tacomas and tundras and my wife has a Highlander and none of them have ever pinged. This is a computer/engine problem and I think we must demand It be fixed. I'm to my wits end!!!
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Help!

The rattle occurs for me around 13-1500 rpm when you step on the gas to accelerate. I have 21k miles on my truck. I have tried all grades and brands of gasoline and nothing diminishes the noise. Although, like someone else said, it seems to be easier to replicate with the A/C on. Toyota has two engineers being flown out from corporate to vacaville, ca to look at my truck specifically. They are supposed to be here today after having my truck at the dealer for over a week. Apparently, this is a known issue and may actually be a problem if they are this interested in it. I'll keep you posted as I should get word back later today or tomorrow.

    Wow that's pretty serious.

I see a lot of people posting with 2011 and newer vehicles saying that they have this issue. Maybe there was an ecu change around this time? I know they added some emissions equipment onto the 2012s, which I thought was minimal.

Not sure if the two are related, but your situation makes me feel like Toyota thinks that something is definitely not right.

Hi guys, Just letting you know that I have been taking my truck to the dealership for this isusue. I have 5k and have the same knocking problem must of our trucks have. I've been with this issue since day one. Long story short I returned the truck and they checked it and I requested that my truck be changed and they said they will fix it. So I open a legal complaint with my dealership just to make sure this gets fixed. They have been following my truck and some other ones that have the same problem(I'm part of a group of 8 trucks who have the same problem, we all sued Toyota) because Toyota knows there is a problem. They even took video and photos of my engine head and the knocking sound on a dyno as per Toyota request. The only answer is that we are just waiting to see what they come with, no word from Toyota yet but this is deffinetly a problem they know of. They are asking all other dealerships with this same problem to take photos and videos of the engine heads. I think it is not a programming issue but a camshaft positioning and timming issue, at least they are treating it that way. And I'm not saying they are fixing my truck, not yet, they really don't know what is going on. I'm guessing they are just gathering info from all over US.
I'm pretty sure there will be a recall on this, if not, court order says they have to change my truck so if they don't fix it I will just keep changing my truck hahaha. I'm still working under good will with Toyota and they have not changed my truck I really don't want to change it just want them to figure out what is wrong and make the recall. I'll keep you guys posted on what they say. Wow, thank god for long story short :pccoffee:

I noticed a knock myself a few days ago at lower RPM with the AC on. It's probably been doing it since I got the truck but I never realized it. I mainly notice it when going up a slight incline and I can feel it "stuttering" and I hear a knocking noise from under the hood.

Here is the update. I just got off the phone with my service advisor. The engineers were actually flown out from Japan, my bad on that. They went over my truck for the last two days and have ordered the dealership to replace my heads and cam. I'm hoping this fixes the issue and maybe they have modified these already to address other people having the same problem. Just a hopeful guess on my part. The only thing that worries me is that my warranty expires in 4k, of which I rack up quickly. I'm thinking I'm going to have to negotiate either an extended warranty for peace of mind at their expense or a guarantee to fix any related problems free of charge. I'm open to suggestions.

I THINK Gadget calls this high gear low rpm load knock iirc.

its user error (not meaning to sound like a jerk)...... select the right gear for the job and u should be fine. Shift the truck down (yes even with the manual trans)

its like taking off in a manual trans in 3rd gear or even second.

I actually had similar issue with my 2013 DCLB 4x4. As the outside temperature increased the pinging got worse. Brought it to Toyota dealership, they didn't know what the cause was so they opened up a case with Toyota Technical. Well the long & the short of it is that after some bitching & moaning to Toyota corporate customer service about how a brand new truck shouldn't ping, they gave me an 8 year 125k mile bumper to bumper warranty. However, my pinging did go away when I started using premium fuel. So I don't see why they wouldn't give you an extended warranty for your peace of mind, especially as well documented as your issue is. I would definitely push for one.

If the new parts don't fix your issue wouldn't it still be covered under the powertrain warranty?

    Good luck with it!

Why would this only affect 2012+? Other than some emissions changes everything else is the same correct?

For the newer trucks..,.... Does the air pump rail deal on the manifolds create any more noticeable racket that's heard at lower rpm but drowned out by other noise at higher rpm?

Premium fuel seems to do the "trick"(90% of the time) for my truck same as SAXD. Before using premium fuel, the noise was only apparent after the engine warms up good and I've gone 15+ miles. Not only that, I notice the truck loses a bit of its "get up and go"/power compared to when it was running cold. Again like SAXD truck, the noise has gotten worse in warm weather. For me it is AZ summers + AC on. Ugh!

Thinking outside the box, the noise sounds like the engine is straining to meet the driver's demand for increase power under load/acceleration(others have already stated this). Could the fuel system be lagging? And the noise goes away because high octane is making up for the lack of fuel the engine needs? The only thing I've changed was the fuel and the noise has all but disappeared.

Then again some have reported using premium fuel hasn't help their 'cause.

    Very frustrating.

    2010 DBC 4x4, 60K miles.

    Good luck!!!
