    Same issue here....

I'm still getting a little bit of ping but it's nothing like a hot day with the A/C on....

OK, crazy stuff happening here... Took my 2012 Tacoma (see my above post) in for its 20K mile oil change. I get back in my truck and hit the highway... stomp on the gas and it's pure.. no knocking! So, I'm guessing that it's just a fluke right? It's been 1000 miles since then and the knocking and pinging has not come back! Same oil as always (Mobile 1 synthetic), same gas as always from the same gas station (Shell Plus 89-91 octane).

So, I'm not sure what this means but the long and short of it is... problem miraculously solved over here after a regularly scheduled maintenance.

Also, I was having problems with my stereo working with my iPhone (controlling skipping tracks from the stereo)... it stopped working correctly after Apple updated their operating system. Now, it works too...

Did my truck get a quiet but effective firmware update???

Too many to list, and I've probably forgotten a bunch.
Don't know. The problem was not typically present at WOT for most people, so you may have had another issue.

It was THE issue... clacking (like it was coming from the valves) sound from the engine most prevalent at around 2000-3000 rpm's. It would make the clacking sound at most moderate accelerations and go away once I put the pedal to the floor.

My truck still has the Tacoma idle tick sound but that's a separate thing (expected with Tacomas).

Believe me... when I read this entire thread, it made me sick. Now, the problem is gone (knock on wood). It was such an annoying sound coming from a new truck that I still hold my breath every time I hit the gas for a moderate acceleration. It made that clacking sound for 20K miles and now it's just stopped after a scheduled maintenance. Go figure.

I've never had the ping between 2-3k rpm's

Mine has been from 1500-2k and subsides quite a bit during the winter when it's cold...

It was 80 degrees the other day and it was pinging so bad I turned the A/C off and rolled the windows down.....

How long ago was your service performed? I'm wondering it maybe coincided with a change from summer to winter blend, drop in average daily temperature, or some other factor.

Winter gas has plenty of butane in it (suspended mix), which has a high octane rating. And it won't dissociate like ethanol can in the presence of water. That's one thing to consider. Lower air temperature in winter can also reduce or eliminate pinging. Or maybe they worked some sort of magic at the dealer. Who knows.

I'm glad it's gone for you and I hope it stays gone for good.

I live in central Texas. So, I don't think the gas or temp has anything to do with it. It stopped the afternoon I picked it up from the dealership. I even remember it clacking on the way up there and thinking that saying something would be a waist of breath (this thread in mind). I've thought of everything that I could have possibly done to make it stop but, I've done nothing different since the day I bought the truck new.

Like I said, the main reason I suspect some kind of firmware of computer tweak is the fact my stereo/iphone controls weren't working correctly before I brought it in... then they also miraculously just started working as well.

I keep holding my breath every time I'm on the gas... I'll post an update if it decides to clack again. I hope it doesn't and that some more people start reporting the same soon.

I have since moved on to a frontier because of this problem but just wanted to add something. A neighbor of mine just got a 2014 TRD ......I think it is a 2014......brand new anyway. I told him the problem I had with mine. He let me take his for a ride. I can tell you his truck ran 100% better then the 2012 pos that I had. It had more pick up, no knocking noises. It felt like I was driving a v-8. My 2012 never drove like that even when new. Mine always felt a little underpowered or like the tranny would shift to soon. I wonder what changes they made to it or what is different. It really seems like a timing issue. Seems like a case of good truck bad truck going on here.

Wow. You realize it won't hurt anything right? There are many of these engines with 200K plus miles with this "problem". Do the new tacoma's come with the dual VVT-i? Maybe that is the difference?

I've owned an 06, 11, and a 12 now and they all have driven the same and I've done all maintenance accordingly.

I too have moved on to a different vehicle. Traded my Taco in. Tired of hearing this engine knock and Toyota telling me there is nothing wrong. Toyota does not stand behind their vehicles. I really would have loved this truck if Toyota didn't screw it up. I will never buy another Toyota again. For those of you that are lucky enough not to have a pinging engine, enjoy it!

Getting close to the 30k mark. My truck still pings, shatters.. I took in to the dealer, and they told me it was a natural characteristic of the truck. I was like WTF if i knew that before i bought it I wouldn't be standing here right now.. So for now ill just keep waiting like everyone else. Will post after the 30k service maybe the ping sound will be fixed..

    Nothing yet, brand new!
Happy to hear yours got fixed... maybe.. I'm going to take mine back to the dealership next week. So far no resolution. They can hear it but say their is no fix as of yet. They have not stated it is normal operation for a port injected v6 engine running on premium fuel to sound like a VM Motori diesel engine during warm up phase. :(

So I had the 30k service done, and no resolution....Truck still pings. But the tech at the dealer told me that Toyota is still working on a ref-lash. So they're very aware of the problem. Just make sure this issue gets documented on their records. So now it's a waiting game..

I think you all should switch to aviation gas it's fairly cheap considering how you like baby your trucks it's only running $5.15 a gallon at the local air port. 87 no ping in 45,000 miles so I guess I'll stick with that.

47k miles for me on a 2012 DCSB and it just recently started the knocking. I've been using 89 octane and mobile 1 full synthetic. FWIW, it came out of the San Antonio plant. I.m going to try 93 and a fuel system cleaner, and report back. This shit is annoying

2 years now that Toyota has been "working on it". Face it - it's not going to get fixed. Embrace the suck and hope it doesn't grenade when the miles get higher. :(

They did not correct my problem after rebuilding the whole top end, flying engineers out and having my truck for over two months. Ran great for one week then the noise came back worse than before. Mediation failed therefore I filed a lawsuit against toyota, since my lawyers found they also did not complete my safety checklist when coming into port.

I still haven't found one that grenaded. Has anyone else seen this knock destroy an engine?
