If the pinging is very slight, is it worth getting the TSB done?

Mike 15- Yes, get it done. It will cost nothing to you and I have found that my truck's performance is improved.

Hi everyone, I just signed up in this forum because this exact problem. I have a 2012 tacoma v6 off-road dcsb with about 32k. I started noticing the noise couple of months ago between 1500-2000 rpm at 30-40 mph with slight acceleration. Changing to 93 octane helped reduced the noise but did not go completely. Well I printed the tsb and went to the dealer and was under the impression that they will perform it and I will be done. After waiting for an hour or so the guy came back and said that the technician that tested the car said that you have a bigger problem than the tsb and we opened a case with Toyota and we have to discuss it with themo_O. I'm pretty sure I have the same infamous noise that everyone here is talking about. They gave me a corolla and kept the truck, they will contact me tomorrow they said. I just don't want them to take the engine apart .

I have an extended bumper to bumper warranty but this will be covered under toyota power terrain warranty.
    Will keep you updated

It was very noticeable on my '13. Haven't heard it at all in the '15

Toyota headquarter told the dealer service to check the valves clearance. Which is mean they have to take the engine heads out, I really don't like that. As far as I know if the problem is with the valves clearance the engine would have failed long time ago. Also I don't have any other symptoms the truck runs fine except for that noise at 1500-2000rpm.

Document everything. And show patience through the whole process, so if they start to screw you over, you can throw it at them.

Thanks for the advise, will do. I'm surprised why they never tried to perform the TSB and Toyota just jumped to the expensive route. I have to wait and see I guess

I'm assuming since I'm well out of warranty that I'd have to pay to have a TSB done, right?

Excellent! So, just take that TSB number/ID in and tell them it needs to be done?

This the # TSB 0044-14. You have to have the noise though. Also it seems hot weather exaggerates the noise, so do it soon before it gets colder. Good luck

FYI my 2013 was pinging badly prior to TSB. Had TSB performed and while the truck is not pinging nearly as much as before the TSB on a 80+ degree day I am still hearing pinging under certain throttle loads on 87 octane. Disappointing. Also the dealer did not install an modification label under the hood. Anyone else have a similar experience?

I know the owner's manual says some pinging/rattling conditions are "normal," so maybe the little bit you hear now is "within the norm..."
