So my 2005 4.0 blew up, I found a 2013 with 160k on it is was thinking about buying, will the 2013 engine work in my 05? I read something about the secondary air Injection pump but I havent found a definitive answer if I can use the 2013.

Yes you can use it but you will need to find a way to plug the SAIS ports in the head.

Also I always recommend you use all the wiring, sensors, injectors, etc original to your truck as much as you can. If the engine grenaded catastrophically I'd be cautious about re-using the intake manifold though as sometimes bits of metal can end up in there and ruin a new engine.

Awesome, thanks for the response. I just found an SAIS delete post, looks like I can get 2 egr block off plates to cover those holes so that seems easy enough.

The engine did grenade catastrophically so maybe Ill leave the new intake manifold on just too be safe. Easy enough to swap all the other stuff though.

The ports are in the heads, the 05 manifolds won't have matching ports so unless you have 2012-15 manifolds you will need to plug the 6 ports in the heads.

Sorry, you said manifolds, plural, do you mean the exhaust manifolds, or are you still talking about the intake manifold?

If you got stuff coming in from the exhaust manifold, you probably have larger problems

What do you mean by stuff coming in from the exhaust manifold?

I should replace both exhaust manifolds? Sorry, a little lost. I do see on the 2013 manifolds what im guessing are the holes he is talking about, but im not sure, I only have experience with my 05.

Are the holes i circled, the holes the other person was talking about?

Exhaust and intake unless you know the cause of your engine failure. Good luck man.

Dm93 will be back and I’m sure very helpful, but in the meantime, yes, those ports are used by the sais system to inject air into the exhaust so that the cats heat up faster at startup or something like that. Mine also runs at engine shutdown. The sais system does more as well I believe, I’m not an expert on it

Gotcha, that makes sense. So essentially he was saying if i had manifolds from 2012+ I could use them and then just block off the system?

There's 2 exhaust manifolds, one on each side. The holes I'm referring to are in the cylinder heads, the 12-15 manifolds have mating ports in them.

    05-11 cylinder head

12-15 cylinder head, ports I'm referring to are circled in red. I imagine if you could find correct size steel galley plugs you could drive them in the holes to plug them.

Got it, thanks for clearing that up for me. Really appreciate the information. So one last thing, if I decided to just get some headers for a 12-15, then I would just need to block off the ports where the injection pump connects to the manifold, like doing a basic delete?

Correct, you will also need 12-15 exhaust manifold gaskets.
Do note that the catalytic converters are part of the manifolds though so they aren't gona be cheap.

Yeah thats the only thing turning me off of the new headers idea. So I did come across a video of a guy plugging holes like this, but it was on a different engine where the holes were straight into the head, where those holes look like they are angling down. In the video the guy tapped the holes and then put some threaded galley plugs in with rtv on the threads to seal it. Is something like that an option or am I going to need to just get something that presses in tight. I imagine tapping those holes with the heads on the block could be problematic in case some metal falls down.

I don't think I would mess with tapping threads in them, if they are round holes I don't see why you couldn't knock press-fit plugs in them with some retaining compound if you can find some that are the correct size.
It's not like they have any pressure on them really.

Something like this is what I was thinking of, sort of a mini freeze plug.

Makes sense, I imagine if anything I can have something like that made if I need too.

Awesome, once again, I appreciate you helping me out.

No problem, you will need 6 of whatever you end up using if your not changing the manifolds.
