4x4 for sure, I have to make it to work no matter what and 4x4 helps with that and a double cab is necessary as there is likely children within the next 3 years.

It would also help to know what kind of country you will be driving in and roads typically traveled. A bone stock 6mt truck traveling 55 mph on country roads should get what you want unless it's all short trips. If it's flatland to just hill country and you drive the truck conservatively you should be able to average 20mpg. I don't have the v6 though so take the above for what it is, my opinion.

Rural highways but they are all 75mph. Mix of flat and rolling hills.

I would be willing to bet you aren't going to average 20mpg if those are the speeds you are traveling at most often. Again just my opinion formed from everything I have read here. You might be close, within 1-3mpg, if you stick with tires that are about the same weight as the originals and don't put heavy all terrains on. But that's basically what everyone else has said.

As much as I want a taco, I may have to reconsider unfortunately.

You'd be HIGH as a kite to pass on this truck ESPECIALLY if it has a 6' bed.

They're no longer made unless you go to Canada.

5 foot bed, but it is a sharp truck.

I was hoping for a little better of a happy medium of 4x4 and good mpg. This is very difficult.

I usually get 16/17 mpg all city driving. Best I ever got was around 18, mostly highway. The only thing I changed from stock was going up a tire size to 265/75/16.

I have a 2013 trd sport 4x4 and on the stock tires I was getting 20 - 21 on the highway. My commute has changed as well as the tire size and the mileage has dropped. It doesn't help that I live where using 4 wheel drive is frequently necessary. I'm getting around 16 now with about 2/3 of my driving in 4wd. Your 20 mpg highway shouldn't be a problem based on my experience :)

Op, your options are limited. There aren't any midsize trucks I'm aware of that sport a double cab, 4x4, and get 20+ mpg except for the 2016 tacoma and GM twins. That's a huge investment for a small improvement in economy. Could you get by with a rav4 or similar suv and a trailer for your "truck" needs? That would open up your options hugely. I almost went that route myself.

I have an automatic and I never see anything above 17.5 around the city
and I'm completely stock. I don't drive too aggressively.

I did a road trip once that was all freeway and that was the only time I saw 20.

Considering the manual is rated for less you will probably struggle to see 20 or above.

If it was an AC 6-speed OR then you'd be stupid to pass. 5' beds are $0.10 / 12.

2015 4.0 with the 6 speed MT here, access cab too.

I only get 20 mpg when i'm on the highway cruising at 55/60. A longer 6th gear would of made sense in the taco. I get around 16-17 around town. I drove a 2.7 and wasn't a big fan. I'm sure i could have made due but i wanted the 4.0. FWIW my truck sees daily duty, i honestly could get along with a corolla or a focus. I use 4wd once in a while, same with hauling anything. The 6 speed does make the truck more bearable to drive.

Real world is you are not going to see 23 driving at 75 in a full size. More like 17. Brother has a 2015 F150 5.0 4x4 and he gets 16 - 17 hwy. Eco boost does not do much better at those speeds.

Well, if I make the plunge I sure hope it does!

Currently, I am in a beater 2001 Ranger but the little thing does get ~24mpg, I'll give it that!

How do you like the whole experience of the truck?

Do you think you could get a tranny shop to replace 6th gear to something a little longer to improve efficiency?

I did not know that, I just assumed the ecoboost and the chevy full size v6 pulled the highway numbers they claimed.
