Has anyone here driven both a 2.7 auto & 2.7 manual?? I'm wondering how they compare???

Yes i have, my dad has a 2.7 auto and mine is the 5spd. His feels much more anemic compared to mine. If you're going with the 2.7L, the manual is the best way to go unless you absolutely need the auto

Did it not make enough torque down low for towing after you supercharged it? Im in the same boat right now, dont want to get rid of my 2.7, but really would like some extra power for when i need to tow.

Torque is ok. Honestly, the whole thing is just that, OK. I was expecting more but is what it is. It's a great kit (URD) and really wakes it up compared to what it was. I got it and originally started with stage 1 then got the header, exhaust and stage 2 pulley. It added some more power and torque. Honestly I'd be much happier if I was closer to 300/300 as opposed to 250/250.

Nitrous is the only thing that would help the bottom end at this point and I'm not doing this. It's a 4 cyl truck, not a race car. Haha

...and yes, towing still sucks. I tried to sell it but I'm just gonna deal with it. I have the title to it and that's the main factor. I don't want a car payment. Lol

Really appreciate your feedback. you could always put a smaller pulley on there. I remember seeing a 2TR on here a while back running a 70mm pulley. I think his numbers were somewhere around that 300/300 you were talking about. Stock internals are good for 400hp with the pistons being the weak link. Just figured id throw it out there in case you get the itch! Also water/meth injection would be good for safety if you do decide to go that route. Adds lots of fuel and cools intake charges as well

What other changes have to be made with that pulley? I'm running the 80 now.

I owned a 3rd gen 2.7L for a few years...even towed an 18 foot travel trailer behind it on shorter trips. I would have never called it quick, but I never felt like it was a complete dog, either (not like you’re describing with this truck).

There’s some charm to the 4 cylinder Toyotas for sure. Reliable as hell and great around town.

Yes they are very slow. But when doing work things, the low end torque always get the job done. I kind like the 4 speed auto. It has the a340e, which almost the same as the 1985 transmission except for a different bell housing. I think it's just kinda funny. And boosting them apparently makes them super fun due to light weight. Plus the regular cabs weigh only 3300 lbs for 5 luggers

Unfortunately i cant say for 100% certainty since i dont have one yet, but either a retune, or additional fueling, for the top end especially, would definitely be necessary. Im not sure how much the 5th injector can compensate, but if thats not enough, a water meth kit would offer lots of fuel and added knock protection too which is very important. I am also not sure how many rpms are safe for the rotrex that came with your kit, but that is something that would need to be considered for long term reliability.

I would call and talk to URD and see if the 5th injector is capable of providing the fueling needed for that pulley. I think the individual with the 70mm had upgraded/bigger injectors

edit: its probably also a good idea to be catless at this point.. id be worrried about melting or clogging the primary cat and then that causing the truck to start cutting fuel when it really needs more. I spoke with Gadget about this once, he called it the "death spiral"

A N/A 4 Cylinder hooked up to an automatic in a truck that keeps getting heavier. Not a good combination for performance.
You can't beat their reliability. But some will find it's performance lacking.

I have the 5th injector already. It came with the kit. Also, the cats were knocked out when I went stage 2 out of necessity. They had to go in order to upgrade the pulley. It's been done the right way. I guess I've just gotten used to it. Don't get me wrong the truck is quick. I just need a little more torque.

I have an AFR gauge and the ECU that comes with it self tunes. I have NEVER seen the AFR outside safe numbers at full boost. It's jam up. I must be getting used to it. It boogies. Just doesn't have much low end. I hate that part.

I get some awesome backfires without the cats sometimes too. Scares the bejesus out of people. I need to get a straight pipe put in there but we have emissions here so I have to run a cheater and keep the cats in place (even though they are hollowed out) in case they get the mirrors out. ;o)

The truck sounds awesome! What kind of catback do you have and do you like the way it sounds?

pretty cool the computer self adjusts the tune. Thats a nice feature when you start making changes here and there

Are you still running the stock 4.10 gears? A regear would make the truck feel much torquier

Yes to stock gears. Would consider regear if it helped with towing and didn't slow the truck down in places that matter. I DD it on highways.

I recommend checking this site out. Allows you to compare different ratios at different speeds. I have 33s on my truck right now with 4.88s and im regearing to 5.29s on saturday. It will turn about 3250rpms at 75mph, but should have plenty of power.

How do I figure out which transmission to choose? I have a 5 speed manual. I have no clue about any of this stuff. I just drive the damn thing. Lol
