Can I remove the pan in the truck? I need to replace a piston in cylinder 5. Some sloppy mechanic lost a nut or washer in the intake.A61B40DF-1ABC-4494-87E0-8CE525F84E58.jpg DC9BD9C1-4ACE-45F5-A2CE-68779B91F4B9.jpg F045E353-5CC5-482E-9B4C-02D88F0FDC17.jpg CE79435D-ED3D-4A29-925E-49616B6175A7.jpg

Second pic between 11 & 12 o’clock. Is that discolored line a gouge? Fourth pic, the head looks unsaveable. It’s difficult to tell, is that head gasket rtv?

There looks like there's a lot more wrong than a bad piston from these photos

    The pan is 2 pieces.
If it’s a 4WD, I think the front differential need to be lowered or removed

As for the cylinder bore, that’s a different story.

@Bishop84 might know what needs to be removed in order to get the upper pan off.

The heads garbage. I already have another one. The cylinder has a real light score, the pics make it look a lot worse than it is. It should hone out.I was fully expecting to replace the head as I thought it had a blown head gasket, not a valve shoved an 1/8th inch into the head. This ones just a work truck so I'm not ready to pop $2500.00 on a engine if I can avoid it. Pistons are cheap and my labor is technically free.

Disassembly is fairly easy, putting it back together is another story.

That usually how it goes for me too.
I can scatter it into pieces in no time…….

Drum brakes are a prim example.
3 mins and I have them apart.
3 hours before I get them back together:rofl:

Drums are easy. Just how many fingers do you get to keep or how long does it take to heal?

    That’s the worst part.
Flat blade screwdriver and needle nose will get you every time.
I will be buying the “correct” tools next time I do them.

It's a bear at home, front diff out. Even then not much room, I think I take the rack and pinion out as well.

Cleaning the gasket is the worst part.

With the block bare, I'd say its easier to remove the engine at this point.

What were they doing that something got dropped down the intake?
Why isn't the shop taking care of it?

Dingle ball it. Don’t use a traditional 3 stone hone. If you are meticulous you can do it engine in place. Tape cardboard to the bottom of the cylinder, ball it, then with a new blue towel wipe up till it comes clean. Then hose the whole thing down. I would check for a bend in the rod since I had it on the bench already.

    Ah ok, just wondering.
I think I'd pull the engine, they are pretty easy to get out if you have the right tools and it would be much easier to work on outside the truck.

I was thinking that's what's going to wind up happening. Even though it hasn't been much of a winter it's still Connecticut in February and no garage.
