2013 - factory stereo sounds like garbage - can I build off of the HU?

One thing I noticed on day one of driving this truck is that the stereo sounds terrible. It sounds so terrible that even my wife thought something was wrong with it. It's overly bassy and basically sounds like all sounds are being played through a cardboard tube. I've dinked around with the "EQ" and turned off the DSP stuff, but nothing seems to really make it better. Over the weeks I've grown used to it, but I know it still is bad....

I realize the speakers are probably basement quality. Would I be able to swap out all the components and maybe add an amp for noticeable improvement, or is building off of this head unit a lost cause?

I'd really like to avoid the cost and drama of replacing the head unit.

    Thanks.

Of course. Didn't seem to help the 'cardboard tube' sound though...

I suspect it's the speakers, but I'd hate to dump $400-500 on new speakers and amp if the head unit is to blame.

Access Original Tonneau Cover; Toyota Side Tube Steps; Focal ISS690 front speakers; Clarion XC1410 mini amp; Gentex 453 rearview mirror with Homelink, Compass, Temp and Autodim; Prodigy P2 trailer brake controller, Heated Seats from www.cobraheat.com, BriteAss Fogs, Phillips Extreme LED H/L. Heated mirrors from @Up2NoGood. 5100 Bilstein all four corners.
I installed new Focal speakers and a mini Clarion amp with the stock HU and it plays just fine. No issues and it'll blow you out of the cab, unless you need supersonic sound that your neighbor two blocks away needs to hear. :)

I also hate mine in my 2014.
I plan on doing a speaker replacement and will also add a small amp.
The 2014 AC has the rear speakers above the head liner, someone was on drugs when they decided to do this.

When I do a speaker replacement I will place the back speakers in the rear doors.

Well, Me and a few others in just about every thread have always recommended not to do rear fill. Focus on the front stage and drop your pennies and time there to get that done perfect and you will NEVER look or search for rear fill ever again. Once you learn or hear the difference you will know what we are referring to.

Get good front speakers, prep the doors properly, Get the right Class AB mid amp and match with a nice set of components. If you have extra cash flow, invest in a processor but for now an LOC and stock deck will suffice but it will 100% be the limiting factor of this whole setup. Get the processor and never look back.
