I am looking for a relatively seamless way to gain bluetooth in my 2010 sport w/ JBL head unit. Would it work to simply swap out the head unit for a 2013 unit with bluetooth? Anyone done this? How did it go?
Forgive my ignorance, I am not a smart fella

i did it on a 2011 JBL with bluetooth to a 2013 JBL with bluetooth. I did it to gain the touch screen. It was basically getting the equivalent head unit (JBL to JBL) and there are I believe two adapters you will need... I don't have the information in front of me but it is all in tacomaworld somewhere. so to sum up, do some research in here and you should be fine.

Hows it working out? Good connectivity? You already had Bluetooth though right?

I like it but in all honesty... if I had the chance to do it again I would consider going aftermarket.

I got it to get the screen because the stock radio had a 10 char limit and did not scroll. I like reading about the songs I listen to on XM. I went from apples to apples... 11 JBL XM BLuetooth to 13 JBL XM Bluetooth. the transition was easy, two plug adapters (one was the antenna and one was a 28? pin plug). once put the adapters in and plugged Sat into the standard port everything worked. The sound was about the same. in the end I paid about $400 for the used head unit and the adapters/cables.

Once I did it I found out that the 2013 Entune radio has an Apps section. I wanted to try that out but could not get it to work. You need to register with Entune and to do that you need your VIN to be correct for the radio. My VIN does not support Entune so I could not register. Getting a VIN that does is practically impossible. Even if I got a working VIN that I could register with I believe the Apps work by hard wiring your phone to the Entune head unit through a USB aux port. in 2011 the AUX port is only an RCA jack. I tried wiring in a USB port but it did not work (tried an adapter based on threads here). I have given up on getting the Apps to work (don't know you want it till you can't have it).

I also wanted to move/copy my backup camera from the rear mirror to the head unit... that has been a non-starter as anyone on this site who knows how to do it have been hard/impossible to reach.

I did price out a head unit and the works. I can't remember the specifics but my goal was to reuse the JBL amp and sub. The package I priced out would support android auto, support the steering wheel controls, provide XM and use the existing sub. I remember that working out to about $800 with all the adapters.

to sum up... I got exactly what I set out to get, but once it all started working I realized there was so much more I could enjoy.

I agree with going aftermarket. You'll get a better unit for the same hassel. Or a million times better sound if you drop the coin to upgrade everything while you are at it.

Wish I could magically give you my blutooth capability. I hate blutooth.
