The reason why you can do it on your motorcycle so easy (did the same mod on my 04 honda 919) is SMOG / CARB / EPA restrictions on motos is FAR less.... thus programming on ecu's dont have to have checks to see if the equipment is still there.

Also the PAIR system on the hondas is FAR more rudimentary using a simple solenoid and some reed valves to suck air into the exhaust on negative pulses. Not like the tacoma where air is forceably fed into the exhaust during startup.

The 2012's had issues due to not having a shutdown purge that helped remove moisture from the valves themselves. 2013+ got a shutdown purge, which helped reduce failures drastically. Also like stated above remove the foam filter that deteriorates and use a 1in uni breather and call it good.

Also outside of emissions the startup running of this pump also has the benefit of extending catalytic converter life as the super rich fuel environment during cold startup wears the cats out faster, introducing clean air helps push the excessivly rich exhaust through the cat.

Sidenote: always loved the guys that showed off their blinged out sport bike claiming 190+mph yet have 2in wide chicken strips.....

Should this be done on a 2.7L or is the V6 the only one that has the issue?

Not sure, you'd have to ask some other 4 cylinder guys. I know for sure on 2012+ 4.0's

Yeah, that's new rubber, and I've not been out for some fun riding yet... Besides, you should know better the claims of speed are straight line.. I don't even take curbs at 190. Be it as it may, you sound like you've been there so I won't argue with a guru.. They usually know it all, and I know I won't win that one...
Wait, you have a 919 w/out chicken strips??? Cool!!!

ARB1977: You're probably tight?? As of now, only time will tell when the 2ND-gens will start misbehaving, clogging, and going into limp mode. I would hope not, but we shall see. Thanks for your time....
