As luck would have it, I had a mini-windfall come my way. Had planned to get a new 2013 this past Dec but had some family items come up. Now that I'm back on deck to buy...I have been told the specific packages/options I want will require a special order with a 30-60 day (or longer) lead time.

My concern is the lead time and the impending re-tool in the coming months for the 2014's. Don't really want a truck built from left over parts...or worse parts from both 2013 and 2014.

Do you think this is a valid issue?

The other problem is since it is a "special order" I probably won't have much flexibility in price negotiations.

Reason not to wait: outside the possible 2-4% increase in price on a 2014 I really don't have one. I don't think there will be a re-design for 2014 - if there was I would push for the 2013.

Will appreciate any and all input.

Spec sheet shows the 5 spd with the V6

Was told All Weather Floor with Access Cab / SR5 was main reason for special order. If it was Double Cab TRD would have better luck. This dealer is my main go to place. But did check with 2 other dealers just to see and they kept trying to push me into double cab.

    Thanks.

I just bought my 2013 DCSB 6 speed manual TRD off road, etc. of which there were 3 in all of California that matched exactly what I needed. The first dealer I went to couldn't find the color I wanted so I scoured all of the dealer websites to find the 2 that matched. I got lucky and one popped up less than 10 miles from me. I was much more willing to take a train to pick the one I wanted up rather than wait for one that I ordered; I just got lucky and didn't have to take the train in the end. Also, I think 2014 there are rumblings about a new generation coming out. Others could offer input one way or another but in the end I wanted a truck that had been built the same for almost 10 years rather than a brand new generation that looked like it was maybe going away from it's off road roots.

Yes...5 spd automatic...my bad and edited my list above.

    Bee...

If you hadn't lucked out...would you have bought something close or gone with 2014 if no re-design?

Majority of people I talked to and checked online lean more to a 2015 / 2016 time frame for possible 3rd gen Tacoma. I'm with you in not wanting to be the guinea pig for the 1st year of the 3rd gen.

    Thx

I special ordered mine, put down money, and they told me that when it comes in I could still cancel and get all my money back . So there is still a little room for negotiations. I got them to knock a little off the price. Super happy I did special order instead of settling for what was available.

I am talking to dealer tomorrow about ordering a Baja with no side graphics. I do not want side graphics or vehicle shield together they are about $800. I will post a follow up.

    Looking at doing something similar.

Just remembered: OP - I was in the Toyota dealership on Tuesday quizing them about the 2014 Tacoma. They looked on their computer and told me that the 2014 build will start in EARLY SEPTEMBER.

I think you are good to go for a 2013 order with no worries on re-tooling or anything. They aren't changing the Tacoma for 2014 so it will be business as usual on the assembly line.

Keep us posted on what you do.

    Appreciate all the input.

Bull...I agree in getting what you want...I tend to keep vehicles for along time whether directly or indirectly. I just had never bought one so close the end of a model year. Besides, as a good friend just told me...its still a Toyota whether built with leftover parts or not.

Dust...you echo the little bit I'm gathering in that the Tundra re-tooling is first then the Tacoma later. Thx.

The dealer is spec'ing out the truck today and will have a quote tomorrow. Will update.

    Thanks again.

Gelo...well one would think that but unfortunately I have run across this in the past. A friend had bought a late production vehicle, foreign brand, and the mfg supply of vendor produced electrical harnesses ran out before end of production run...no problem...we got plenty for next year's run. Just different vendor with different connectors!. Used to give the folks at AutoZone fits trying to work out parts for it.

Its an isolated case, but as I have stated before I have never bought one so late in the model year. However, I think all is good as with no re-design on the immediate horizon.

    Thx.

Just heard back from dealer...but have never run across this requirement...

I need to put down a NON-refundable $1000 deposit and then in 30-60 days Toyota will either decide to build the truck or not??

You heard of this before? Well...that is a deal beaker right there.

    Thx.

When I ordered mine I got a smoking price on it, but I also had to put down a $1000 deposit (check) that the dealership just held on to and gave back to me upon full payment of the truck.

As far as giving them $1000 non-refundable and then waiting 2 months to make a decision on whether or not they will make it, that can't be correct. There has to be a misunderstanding somewhere. We're talking about $1000 towards a product and if they decide not to make the product, it's theft of your $1000.

It will likely be similar to mine. $1000 check to hold the vehicle for you, and then 1-2 months for delivery. It takes them 5 days to build the truck, and about 2 weeks to get the truck to the right dealership. The real wait is for them to start building the damn thing.

I ordered my truck and they were negotiable when it finally came in. Also, I didn't leave a deposit. I had a pre-approved check from my credit union for $25000 and the dealership said it was not necessary to leave a deposit as I proved intent to buy with that check.

I ordered my 2013 last month and just got my VIN # today. It's on it's way from San Antonio and should be here on the 20th. I didn't have to put a deposit down either.

Put $500 down as a refundable deposit when I ordered my '12. As the guy two posts above said, intent to buy was the key to the deal.

I think Grieby is right...just a mis-understanding or typo. I'm working this deal through email and voice mail as I'm working nights right now. I could understand the non-refund since this is an off spec vehicle with possible limited resale and they just want to cover their side if I refuse vehicle after delivery.

As for my intent to buy I had offered to write a check earlier which they said wouldn't be necessary.

This is my go to dealer so I'm sure I will work it out...the non-refund part just caught me off guard. I guess I'm just a little gun shy with the late date in ordering this truck...which led to the original post.

    Thanks again.

Sounds like about 6 weeks from order date. I am thinking about ordering one myself. One dealer would not even give me a range. I did my own research and found 6 - 8 weeks.
