Hey guys, like the title says... hopped in my truck to come to work tonight, it started right up, then died after a second or two. I waited a few seconds, started it back up and everything was fine. No CEL, no extended cranking, no stumbling, no running odd... I didn't recently disconnect the battery, my clock and radio presets were all still there (doesn't seem like the battery died). I have been doing work on the truck on and off, and have turned the key to accessory a few times without starting it over the past few days - would that trigger some kind of security issue to make the truck start and stall? Any input would be great! Truck has 79k miles on it, just recently picked it up.

Mine has done that 4 or 5 times in the 13 years I’ve ones it.
I wouldn’t worry about it unless it keeps happening.
I don’t why it does it. But I haven’t worried about it.

Oddly enough, I can disconnect my battery, and the truck will start up and run just fine. Lots of guys claim their truck will start and die after a battery disconnect.
Mine has never done it. Maybe it is making up for it by doing it when ever it wants?

hahahaha true! Yeah, I don't feel overly worried about it, just trying to figure out what would cause it...

What “could”, could be a number of things. From fuel pump resistor, to sensors. Who knows? But you’ll never find out until it does it consistently. I personally don’t want to find out…..if you know what I mean:thumbsup:

Pretty normal after a battery disconnect, mine has done it off and on since it was new as well though. It seems to do it more often when the battery starts getting aged.

I just bought it and it came with an Optima red top battery in it... it looks new, but I know nothing about it. I haven't disconnected the battery or anything...

Mine does the same thing: Example: windows down all day: go out to close them. turn the key to "on", close the windows, turn off and remove the key and lock the doors. Next time start: (even if it's the next day) it will crank a little longer and/or run a little rough for a bit, or immediately stall. Second start is fine. Maybe something the ECU doesn't like if you don't follow through to a complete start.

Doesn't like to be blue-balled like that apparently!

All it has for cold start strategy is the coolant temp sensor. It doesn't always get it right and they can act flooded sometimes.

Clean the throttle body just for the heck of it. When's the last time it was checked?

Other than that, if it repeats, might have to hook up a fuel pressure gauge and see if it's bleeding down while parked

Valid suggestion, but my truck commonly sits for 2-3 days and then fires right up happy-pappy, -unless- I turned the key to "on" without starting it up to do something like check the outside temp or put up the windows. If I do that, it acts up on the next start. It can actually be duplicated (IMO).

If I had to guess: I'd point to "old school" 10 year old, cranky ECU programming. Dunno.

Yeah, and I had turned it on and to accessory a bunch of times over the last two days without starting it, after replacing the bumper, fixing the mirror-shake, messing with interior light bulbs, and messing around with the head unit... I'm assuming I did something the security system didn't like...

It won’t start at all if it is security system related.
It will crank but never start.

I am sticking with, it’s nothing to worry about unless it continues to do it:thumbsup:

^^^Totally agree^^^ It's funny to say, but I don't worry about it because it's so consistent.... (if that makes sense)

Thanks guys! Glad to hear it’s just something that happens when you blue ball the truck repeatedly, and isn’t an indication of something being “wrong.”

Mine used to do this randomly, I believe I narrowed the beginning down to when I installed an K&M engine air filter that was quite oily, I had to clean my mass air flow sensor several times and blow the oil out of the filter, it hasn't done it again for several years. Hopefully this helps, mine stranded me for about an hour before it started and ran in a hunting field in Western Kansas with no cell service once, hopefully you don't experience something similar before you get it figured out.
