2013 starter won't turn.

Stopped the truck while I was at the park for an hours or two. When I got back in to go, it wouldn't start. Wouldn't turn over. Didn't make that groan of a starter trying to turn with a flat battery, didn't make that chatter when a starter solenoid is cycling on a flat battery. Just a click and nothing.

Battery is fairly new (a couple of months), I didn't leave anything on, and just toe be sure it wasn't a flat battery, I tried jumper cables. Still the same, no turn, no groan, no chatter.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Also, when you turn the key to on, and wait till everything stops flashing and blinking, what are you left with illuminated normally? I've started it hundreds of times, and frankly, never noted what's normal. What I get now (now that it's not starting and I'm finally paying attention) is the battery icon, the oil pressure icon, and the Check engine light. Is that what you''s normally expect to see, or is that telling me something?

 

Welcome to TW. How many miles is on it? Do your headlights work verifying you have battery power? One thing you can do is tap on the starter and try cranking it over. Sometime that will get it to start, if that works then your starter is going out...

 

Did you jump with neg cable on frame ground not battery neg? A dead battery with shorted cells may not jump start so first pull and test the battery. If you have a multimeter test the voltage at the terminals should be about 12.6 sitting there. Each 2.1 VDC drop is a shorted cell. Are your battery cables clean and tight? Newer batteries do die.

1)First and foremost, clean and tighten the battery terminals then try restarting it.
2)If that doesn't work, tap the starter with a hammer or 2x4.
3)Lastly, remove battery and starter and take both to an auto parts store to have them load tested.

Thanks. The terminals are pristine, clean and tight. I do have a multimeter and battery tester, but didn't have them with me last night when I was messing with this. I'm taking them with me today, to make sure it's not a battery issue but TBH, I don't think that's it, there's nothing else about this that suggests a weak/discharged/failed battery.

 

No car alarm. I do have an aftermarket remote start system (gift from a previous owner) that could perhaps be a factor.

 

So update, My battery condition taster says my battery is fine, and it's showing 12.4 V with no load and with the truck on with headlights on it's still holding 12.11 V, so I'm pretty confident the problem isn't the battery. I beleive that I can hear the starter relay making contact, so starting to look like a starter failure.

So, is it possible to bump start a 2013 Tacoma with manual transmission if the starter is dead but everything else is working like it should? I understand that some modern engines can't be bump started.

 

Your problem is the starter solenoid contacts are burned. You can replace them in an hour or two for less than 40 dollars.

The click you hear is the starter relay engaging, but the solenoid doesn't make contact so the starter doesn't turn.

You can buy the contacts and plunger new from Nations Starter and Alternator for about 30 - 35 bucks. Much cheaper than hundreds for a rebuilt POS from Autozone etc.

You called it. Finally got back to this (working out of town in the meantime) and pulled the starter out, You were right, the contacts are burned and pitted pretty badly. Gonna see if I can get parts locally in the morning.
