Is it bad that I have been working on plans for a flatbed? :spy

I have a Rubicon trip coming up and having run the trail several times already I don't think my bedsides will do well.

Correction: If you drop the s on bedsides your pic shows up much sooner than page 7 haha. So I actually just googled "tacoma dented bedside" cuz I know I didn't make it to page 7 when I found your rig. haha

Good thing "tacoma dented bedside" isn't one of the top 10 most searched subjects...

we shall see. None of it would be permanent. The flat bed would mount to the frame using the factory bed mounts. I'd use the flat bed on the gnarly trails that would tear up the bed. Most of the time I'd just store the flatbed and run the normal bed.

Dunno if I'll have time to get it done or not, but definitely looking into it. Here's the flatbed I built for my old '85. Not sure if I'll use any of the same ideas or not.

Pulling and swapping beds sounds like a lot of work! Have you possibly thought about building a lightweight subframe in your original fenders and just making them removable?

Edit: everyone of your rigs that I have seen on here have all seem to be nothing less than top notch!

Pulling the bed is 6 bolts, and the gas filler. Just need an extra set of hands to help me lift it off. Shouldn't be a big deal

I imagine the flatbed will be a bit heavier though. Granted two people can probably still lift it easy enough.

    ...too much shit to list.
Except you can't get to the plugs until you pull the taillights, and that's 4 screws each. And then the plug is siezed from 5 years of grime and shit, so you end up spending 15 minutes just to end up breaking a tab and ripping a wire out of the socket. Then you spend 25 minutes looking for your soldering iron come to find out your wife used it to poke holes in some plastic piece of shit project she had and completely ruined the tip. Then you run down to the local hardware store only to find out the soldering iron you had is archaic and they don't sell anything even remotely close for replacement parts. So you buy a brand new one and go home and plug it in only then to realize you have no fucking idea what happened to the flux after the last time you moved, so you run back to the hardware store and get some. Come back and realize you left the fucking soldering iron plugged in and the fucking dog knocked it over and it melted clean through your favorite garage stool!

    Just sayin....

Somewhere in that whole process you just listed I sure hope I find a set of pliers hiding under my intake or something. ;)

I was pretty happy that they were still there. To me, finding a lost tool that you already swore off as a loss is like getting a new tool for free!

And for those that missed it :anonymous:

The first time will be the worst time... just wire in some multipin waterproof plugs for your lights and you will be golden. And make a quick disconnect system for your bed rack, and take the time to remove all vital items such as tool boxes, jack, shovel, and all other little items you might possibly need along the way.

Then put them all on your other bed after it get swapped out.

Its really nothing to do before a weekend adventure, its nothing at all....
