I would lock it and gear it before a rear bumper. I went to Moab without sliders and bumpers (hell I even had a bull bar up front) and with about 2-3" of lift and true 33's and my rear locker and did just fine and hardly bypassed anything. Sure something was a little nerve racking but that made it that much better when I cleared it:D

That locker will come in handy a lot like in the snow and mud where armor won't help. Plus the gears will make your daily driving much nicer.

Looks like you already have a front bumper and if you already have or are soon getting sliders even better! I would just lock and gear it and rely on your receiver hitch to take some abuse. And on the off chance you FUBAR your bumper, no biggie cuz you are just going to replace it anyway.

I have hit my rear bumper on some rocks twice now and it only damaged the bumper and nothing else. I did this here in Idaho crawling on lava rock instead of slick rock like Moab.

Nice, it is just some custom kit you basically added in or is it model specific for the 1st gen Tacoma?

I already have an E-locker. haha And my HC rear is already being built:D

Brady speaks the truth! Rear hitch receiver took the most scrapes and drags, then sliders, and I imagine a bumper will be only touched on the hardest of obstacles.

Just fuck it and regear and get an arb and don't look back.

My rear bumper still has zero paint on the underside from dragging it so much. The receiver definitely saved me though.

We must be in different parts of idaho then, because I have used my sliders more here in the desert than in Moab, I bought my bumper for idaho wheeling. I went to the Moab meet last year, never hit my front and hit my sliders only a handful of times, granted I didn't do the most hat core trails because it was my first serious off roading trip, but what I said is mirrored by what many others experienced too.

    :D

    Some day!!!!!

    Soon I hope..

X2. I've used my sliders and bumper more outside of Moab then at Moab. Only hit my front bumper once trying a harder line on a trail. Didn't touch the sliders...till I rolled it.

I'd get the rear bumper. You can do a TON in Moab without a locker. Slick rock is so easy to wheel on.

To set the record straight, the scangauge II is now able to read ecu auto tranny temp data for the 2nd gen tacomas and '07 and later tundras. It does so though their xgauge codes.

we do live in different parts of idaho and we wheel diffenently too cuz i have fuck tons of rash all over my front bumper due to moab and idaho wheeling, rear bumper is minior and sliders well they have seen most of their abuse from moab.

What i ment by my comment is ther is a massive differnence between sliding down slick rock and snaging a bumper on lava rock..

allso gonna add that i think a locker and bumper is more important than gearing untill bigger tires come into play..

After sleeping on it, I think that I will lock the rear only with an ARB and not regear. Also after thinking more, I will probably not go to 35s with this truck. I would rather find an older runner or toyota PU and go huge on that one. This truck is too long and wide for a hardcore trail rig. If I lock this one, I should have a rig that will do most of Moab, then also have enough money to get duratracs in a month or so and then I get tax money do a TG rear bumper. After that I can just finish this truck expo-style and work on a crawler when my driving skills are more developed and I have more money.

I'll just get a guage pod pillar and add a custom tranny temp guage there, although if I just pick up one of those tranny coolers with the e-fan on it, I doubt I would have anything to worry about so I may not bother. haha

Maybe if you run some 'real' trails next time, instead of letting your truck take a dirt nap, you can use your sliders a little more. ;)

All I know is mine got plenty of use.

if you look close I even hit hard enough to flex the slider into the rocker. That was a HARD hit.

Monte, again, I'm just giving you crap. :) There are LOTS of trails in Moab that can be done in a stock Tacoma. That's what is so great about the place, anybody of any skill level can go down there and have a blast. If you don't want to hit the big stuff, don't.

But even then, sliders are a worthwhile mod even for otherwise stock trucks. Steveo77 was with us on Golden Spike and his truck was not much beyond stock, but he had sliders and he did awesome even without a locker. But I know for a fact that he used his sliders.
