I found out a little more of why they total these vehicles. On the Tacoma there is a bumper arm that extends off of the frame that holds the bumper in place that gets bent in a lot of these collisions. Insurance companies don't want to deal with it. You can buy these bumper arms and weld them back in place.

There's a guy I know locally that I have bought several vehicles from over the years, all salvage titles. I usually got them for really good prices, but I knew going in they were salvage titled, and dealt with the consequences down the road. Upon selling and/or trading these later on, I knew they would not bring the usual dollars that a clean title would. Some did better than others. If you know that going in, and are prepared to take a hit in the event you sell it later, whatever price you decide is doable for you seems best. I have to agree, though, that price seems a bit high.

I did run into the situation with one or two of those vehicles where I was not able to obtain financing, so they had to be a cash sale, or financed some other way, ie. personal/line of credit/home equity loan.

One of two things happened in order for a new vehicle like that to be a total loss, either it was a flood vehicle or there was an extensive amount of physical damage and it was more cost effective for the insurance company to total it rather than repair it. I would pass on it if I were you, especially considering I just bought a low mileage 2013 TRD sport 4x4 DCLB for only a few thousand more than what your cousin is asking. It even came with a 1 year / 12k mile bumper to bumper warranty.
