I have a 2013 Ext Cab that's starting to rust right next to the cat's. Anyone know what the recall is on the frames?

2013 should still be covered. 12 years from in service date (first time it was registered).

They won't do anything for rust, there has to be a hole.

It's a 10"x3" hole hidden behind the right cat

Make an appointment at your nearest dealership ASAP! Have them do a frame check, if they give you grief over it show them the hole. Also call Toyota corporate and start a case file. Plus take pictures of the hole and any rough looking rust that is on the frame, plus drop the spare and check the cross member under it. If you have a 10 cm hole anywhere in that frame that was caused by rust you are entitled to a new frame. Just don’t go hammering on it before the inspection to create new holes as they will reject. First place you go to doesn’t fail it, go someplace else. These frame replacements mean good money to the dealership.

Do what he says. If you have a 10”x3” hole they won’t turn you down if you’re within the parameters for the model years and years since date first in service. But don’t wait too long to get the process started with the dealer, sounds like it’s not a super fast process from what I’ve heard. Then again, what process is ever fast with a dealership?

As other's have said, it's a "service campaign" rather than a recall, which implies it would be replaced even if not an existing problem.

When I had mine inspected (it's a 2013) after I got it a couple of years ago, the way it was explained to me was that if they found it needed replacement, they will submit the paperwork to Toyota, and it would be replaced. If it was fine (at least according to their campaign spec), they would apply the CRC and notate it in their system for any future warranty if needed (I recall it was 12 years from when the truck was first placed in service - so 2025 in my case).

Mine was all surface rust, so they sprayed their goo along the internal tubing and capped them off. I sprayed the outside with CRC HD Corrosion Inhibitor (like Cramoline) myself.

As stated elsewhere above, they have to actually find a hole (I forget what size) in order to replace. So it kinda sucks if you have a really bad frame, but not bad enough to have a hole because you know it's coming, and you're not going to get a replacement.

Trying to picture what part of frame is beside cats on the 4.0 4x4. Is it a crossmember? Should put a photo up.

    It’s not hard to find.
    Crawl under the divers side.
Find the converter. Look at the frame next to the heat shield.

OP, you might want to look at rear of the frame on the passengers side.
Right behind the front leaf spring mount all the up to the muffler.
That’s a spot a lot of people miss.
Any spot where heat is close to the frame is a spot to look at.

    My theory is,

It’s the repeated wet/dry….wet/dry….wet/dry process. The heat from the exhaust makes the process happen faster.

The frame is the same pretty much.
    Crawl under the drivers door.
It’s the part that goes up and behind the drivers wheel.

It’s not as bad to rust in this spot on the 2.7.
But it still can. It didn’t help that they left a big holes there to begin with from the factory.

From someone that just went through this within the last year. Here is my advice look at this thread Another Frame corrosion question | Tacoma World it has the actual information on it. Look at post #19 from Msgt O which has the PDF of the message Toyota released. Calling Corporate is pointless as they will just argue with you saying you don't qualify. My dealer was really the one that made it happen. I took the message to them they read it as they were not familiar with it. Not a common occurrence in the southern states. They inspected took pictures and sent it per the message instructions and it got approved. Hope this helps.
