Hey guys, I’m new here and unfortunately I’m not mechanically inclined. Had my 2013 Tacoma just lock up on me as I was driving. No warning lights or anything. At Mechanic now and nothing shows up on diagnostic. He has driven it around and no problems. I put it in neutral to try and push it into parking lot and it wouldn’t budge!!! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

    I’m a bit confused.

    It locked up on you.
You then had it towed to the mechanic, who drove it around?
And now it is locked up again. And it doesn’t move in Neutral?

I was going about 45 mph and it just locked up. Pulled into median and put into neutral but wouldn’t move. After a few minutes it did drive across the street into parking lot but very strained... “hard to explain “ I shut it down for a few minutes and looked it over but nothing caught my eye. After 5 minutes, cranked right up and sounded fine. Drove it very slowly around lot and no problem. Got back on road and only got about 100 yards down the road before it locked up again. Had it towed and mechanic says he has been driving and no issues... I told him to drive it over the weekend. Thinking maybe something had to over heat before it acts up again?

Maybe brakes locking up, any smoke or odd smells when it happened?

does it feel like the engine is bogging down or that the wheels are locking up?

I'm assuming it's like having the brake kick on and drag a tire.

If its a feeling in the wheels what I'd start with is the brakes on all four corners, check them to make sure they are all good.
    Check brake fluid levels.
Then I'd check my diffs fluid, might as well do a fluid swap and watch for metal.
Then T-case since you already did the diffs.
If none of that looks off it could be the transmission. :notsure:

Appreciate all the advice It was like the tires locked, heard squealing and also felt like engine bogging when I tried to force it off the road. Mechanic said all fluid levels were good.

Had the oil change about a month ago and they tried to talk me into replacing rear brake pads but I passed. Had a friend who used to work for Toyota do general maintenance on it when it hit 100,000 miles and he replaced front pads, said rear were still good. Told mechanic this and he didn’t think that would have caused a problem???

You could have a brake on one of the wheels sticking?
Does the truck pull one direction before this happens?
Did you notice any strange smell?

It seems to be common for the drums to hang up. i'd pop those covers off and take a gander.

    Maybe a wheel bearing.

Yeah this is possible, though I'd think OP'd notice it making noise long before it bound up. Mines on its way out and I can feel it. Window down at 30-35 you can hear it. I got new to me gusseted spindles with HD bearings ready to slap in when the time is right.

I would expect a wheel bearing to remain locked up once it locked, sticking brakes on the other hand may release when they cool off.

Well ypou could be correct as I have no crystal ball. Seems odd that it just locked up going 45 mph and didn't apply the brakes. I guess equally strange that a wheel bearing would lock and then release too.
    Can't wait for the update!
