So i went to get a price for a spare key and fob for my 2013 tacoma for my wife.
the locksmith took my key came back and said $80 for the key and $85 for the fob .

    no way im paying that.
took it to another place down tge road to a local hardware place. Guy scans my key and says no chip. so i bought 2 keys for 9 bucks.
Was tge other place trying to rip me off?? or did he just assume there was a chip??

Have you tested the new key, with all other keys and fob in the house?

You can buy a cheap key fob off Amazon for less than $20 bucks & program it yourself. I did it for my 2013. Yes that’s a big rip off

Do your original keys have a little “G” carved into the metal?

Guess it depends on which model you have. I’ve got a base Prerunner ‘13 Tacoma and it’s key is not chipped.

If you are in the US and have a 2.7 liter engine odds are nearly 100% that you do not have a chipped key.

If you have a 4.0 liter engine there is nearly 100% chance that you do have a chipped key.

Chipped keys are for the immobilizer system (engine will not start if the wrong or no transponder key is inserted), Toyota keys with a chip have a dot or a G stamped into the blade of the key depending on year model.
All 2nd gen Tacomas with the V6 engine have an immobilizer, a few 4 cyl trucks did but the majority don't.

Ok got it. I thought it would be some little shiny visible square chip or something. I was concerned I was missing out on the fun!

If your key has a . Just under the head it has a 40 bit encryption chip. A G or an H stamped is an 80 bit encryption chipped key. No stamping at all under the head and there is no chip

I was glad that the 2007 Tacoma I bought a month ago came with a spare key, if not I was going to have one made. I anticipated paying about $80, but since I have the 2.7L I guess it's not a chip key. If I do get one made, I assume then a hardware store would be able to cut a new one as long as the original isn't too worn. I'd think the cost would be about $10 or so.

Good deal. And good to know a fob is that inexpensive.
