    Most likely carbon build up. If you own a stick DOWN SHIFT! If you own a auto, start driving like you stole it instead a soccer mom.

    How can I find out what the factory is doing to address the pinging.. I took mine to the local dealer and he told me it was the fault of ethanol.. I now run ethanol free gas.. made a little difference, but now does it most of the time..

    even with ethanol free mine still pings too.. it does it a little less, but at times it is a steady detination. a couple of weeks ago my rear window lock broke, so when they are replacing the back window in a week or so, I am going to address it again.. last time they told me it was the ethanol.. so I changed gas to ethanol free, only to still have the ping. I know long term it will eat holes in pistons with the ping. I wish it did it all the time.. but it doesn't.. just most of it..

    You won't find out, really. However, the more complaints Toyota gets, the better. Bitching on this forum is a good start, but it's obviously not getting anything done.

    I recommend you pester Mike Sweers, Chief Engineer for the Tacoma and Tundra platforms. I have his email handy, if you want it (PM me). Last time I posted it in the forum for others with this problem, I was thoroughly excoriated by the fanbois. FWIW, I still stand by my decision to do that.

    The other thing I did, which actually got me a phone call from Toyota Corporate (in Torrance, not Japan) was to write a particularly sharp letter to Mr. Toyoda, himself (CEO). That discussion is ongoing, but I'm not hopeful.

    You could also try arbitration (failed for me, worked for others) and then suing under your state's lemon law statute, if you have one (most do, AFAIK).

    Sooooooooo. I realized the sound i've been hearing for the past few thousand miles is engine ping. Sounds really bad. 2-6th gear I hear it as long as i have the gas pedal pushed at least 30-40% I have a 4.0 6speed. sound like some sort of flapping sound going on under the hood. Haven't tried premium fuel yet. Ill prob try that next and if there's no difference its going to the dealership. Oh btw i have only 8k on my truck. Its a 2013 as well.

    Is anyone noticing a pattern here? Western and southern owners? I live in MI and have not noticed any pre-detonation problems, yet. I wonder if its a gas blend problem? I have 8k mi on a 13 4.0 6speed.

    What are your engine RPMs when you hear the pinging?

    It's entirely possible to lug a manual transmission vehicle, and entirely avoidable. An automatic should have the software to avoid being in the engine lugging zone. But, of course, the Tacoma/1GR-FE/5AT doesn't.

    Usually its in 4th 5th or 6th gear around 2k to 3k rpms with the gas pushed around 40% going up a slight incline. I changed the gas today to 92 chevron. we'll see how it sound now.

    Count me in with this issue. I have tried all grades of gas and weather seems to have no bearing on the severity of the " knock". It is a beautiful 70 degrees in Bama today and still the annoying rattle at low rpms and 35/40 mph. My truck has 28k miles and is taken care off. I am frustrated with this as well, if I wanted a knocking engine I would have kept my 2002 with 200k+. What options do I truly have with dealership responsibility?

    Ultimately, it's not really the dealership's problem, it's Toyota's problem. Toyota has been claiming a 'fix' in the works for approximately 18 months now, with nothing to show for it. The dealership can't really do much for this problem w/out authorization from Toyota.

    It's a screwed situation, I agree.

    Hey guys, I'm new to this conversation. I bought my Toyota Pre-Runner, 2013, in September of 2013. Until today, I have spent half of the time at the dealership and have filed a complaint at the Toyota corporate office. I have all of the problems that you have. At 3,000 miles when I took my truck to the dealership, they told me it has not "broken in" yet. They told me to drive it for a while and I have been doing that. I am almost at 40,000 miles on the truck, and it is still not broken in according to them. There is a still a knocking noise. I own a gas station and I know the difference in the gasoline. I have tried each and every brand, all of the grades, including all of the additives in the market. It has not solved the problem. So now it is a part of my daily life.

    Good Luck!

    Nothing yet, brand new!
    I'm in the same boat too. I'm not holding my breath any longer especially after I read the news that corporate is getting a 1.3 billion fine from the feds over "PedalGate".. It's doubtful this issue is registering a blip on their radar. They have bigger issues to deal with. :(

    I ping no matter what brand of gas and octane, I've added the Lucas injector cleaner with a bunch of tanks so I don't even care about it anymore.

    Maybe you got water in tank. Try some dry gas or sea foam? Only pinging I had this fixed it. 17 yrs only had to do this one time.

    Hello, I had (have) the same problem, usually in summer (90-120 degrees), in the afternoon, when I stop the car and then I start over, I live in southwest arizona, gas 87 oct am/pm, what I did was "reset the computer" (i read it somewhere), leave it unplugged from battery all night, and the next day plug it back, it looked like out of the dealer, aut 4doors 4.0 TRD 4x4 2012, I hope this helps. i do this once every 2-3 months.

    All you're doing is causing the computer to forget several things:

    Fuel trim values;
    Timing (spark) values;
    and maybe parameters related to VVT-i timing.

    Which is fine - it does 'fix' the problem for a while. Usually <200 miles for most people, from what I've seen, but that depends on driving habits.

    My 2011 Taco Pre Runner made a pinging on acceleration, truck is a daily driver with 31k on the clock. Did it yesterday afternoon for first time. Drove truck 95 miles to airport and it sat for a week in the parking lot. Pinged several times, will try again today. It's under extended warranty and our Dealer is pretty good. Will continue to follow this thread.

    Wow. About time. Can anyone get a copy of this TSB so we can cross-post it in all the bigger "knock" threads?
