    Hi Folks,
I'm a nub here but I have looked and looked for good info how to get a stuck closed tailgate opened. The latch broke a few weeks ago and I ordered a replacement. Several recommendations to remove the composite inner panel but that is impossible a when the gate is in the closed position. That panel hooks over the bottom edge of the metal part of the gate and the tolerance is to tight to slide it up. So what now? I can't be the only one that has had to replace the latch. IMO that latch is poorly designed to begin with. Appreciate any help resolving this issue.
    Thanks in advance!

You’ll need to pry off the top cover from the outer edge of the tailgail. You’ll probably damage it, but at least you’ll get the tailgate open

I would just cut out the tailgate plastic cover inside the bed around the latch for access to the latch mechanism. Only damage would be to the plastic cover and it should be easily replaced, and the tailgate would still be usable until you get it replaced.

Removing the top cap of the tailgate was the way to go. It's been cold where I live but I had the vehicle in for some service work and asked my mechanic to see if he could figure out how to get the gate released. Once it warmed up it came off a bit easier. The molded clips are designed to release but my mechanic said it was still a tug to get it off. It did not damage the cap. Good luck to others that run into this problem.

Now remove that crappy, weak top of the tailgate. Replace with Kb Voodoo tailgate top. It completely changes the feel and strength of the tailgate!?
