2013 Tacoma V6/4.0 L, 200,000 miles. Bought with 143,000 miles. Oil is changed regularly and all service is provided by local Toyota dealer.

Check engine light came on as well as Trac light. Then the oil pressure light came on and off.
Tried to get home, water temperature was normal, then the engine started making a clanking sound, so I pulled over.

Friend called later that day, to say that I had left an oil spot on his driveway. Question-what
would cause oil to leak out of engine?

If oil pressure light comes on, turn off engine.

Any number of things can cause an oil leak. If it had thrown a rod, it wouldn't have run at all.

If the engine has indeed thrown a rod, this is likely why.

get underneath and see where the oil is coming from.

If something like a drain plug came out the last people to touch it (toyota) would likely be at fault.

ask your friend to be more specific, like a spot or like a puddle....

just a random stab though, perhaps an oil drain plug that was not tightened properly

It would be my guess the dealer did a recent oil change and failed to pour in the correct amt. of oil or didn't pour in any oil.

Welcome to TW! Have it towed to the dealer (Don’t drive it!) and DO NOT MENTION that you drove it with the oil pressure light screaming at you. That poor motor... smh.

    When was it last serviced?
What was done at that time?

First thing I’d do is NOT run the engine any more if the oil light came on.
If you have to run the engine, add oil first. If you hear that clanking noise, TURN IT OFF.

Crawl under there and look where it is leaking.

did you check the oil level on the motor?
If you had a leak bad enough to cause a puddle in friend's driveway it likely was leaking before you got there too. Could be low on oil from the leak.
Where is it leaking? as mentioned could be drain plug, oil filter gasket, oil inlet or outlet hose to the oil cooler, etc..

Friend said, it left a 6'' puddle of oil. Toyota is going to look at why it lost the oil. Oil was changed on August 8
and truck had been running fine. I am suspicious at this time. Dealer has offered me a truck to drive and come down
off an install price for a Jasper engine of under 8 grand.

This is my 3 rd. Tacoma and even with 200,000 I like the truck.

The red oil light is not a genie lamp. You don’t get 3 wishes when it comes on.

Dealer already make deals without even inspecting it?

I’d be suspicious, seeing how they already talked about coming down off a price’

I always get suspicious when I hear about deals before a diagnosis.

Remember, second opinions can sometimes save thousands.

FWIW, I’m in no way bashing dealerships or their workers.

I know a guy that threw a rod once.
Cost him 14k, a house, and a lawyer.

Never seen any oil or metal.

You are probably right. If that's the case, the Toyota dealership needs to eat the cost of the labor to fix your engine.

Whatever you do, don't mention that you drove it with the oil pressure light on. They will probably deny anything if they have that info.

I've heard stories of techs draining the oil and there is never any put back in. Engine shits itself pulling out the bay and into the lot.
