LoL, feel free to ask anything in PM, I don't mind. Posi is awesome but it clearly has its downfalls. Luckily (I think) OP wouldn't need to worry in a 2k13

LoL... shit always cracks me up.

Indeed, it made me laugh so I typed it. It's much funnier on the inside, that's usually the case with my humor.

I am not the all knowing but I think you will be happy with either, if you like the looks of the sport because of the scoop get it, I personally wanted an offroad but couldn't pass on the deal I found on a sport and it didn't come with a hood scoop . it's a '10 so if I gun it on snow it spins but when I turn the little dial (its hard to get used to not having a shifter for 4wd) the thing hooks up in the snow!

make a list of what you want out of your truck options wise comparing the sport with the OR and you'll end up answering your own question. they both will have great traction in snow while in 4wd if you get decent tires.

    YES...
Sport= scoop and trim (looks) and all climate 17" tires
Off Road= More traction systems (locker, A-TRAC, hydraulic booster) and all terrain 16" tires :D

2WD is one tire spinning when traction is lost under one rear tire.
4WD is twice the traction of 2WD (any truck)... two tires spinning when no traction under the front or rear.
Locker added is three times the traction of 2WD... three tires spinning
A-TRAC is 4 times the traction of 2WD... with up to 4 tires turning together if traction is lost under any of them.

A 4WD without any extras will take you far and away to more places... the added systems of an Off Road 4WD will give you added security that getting stuck may be a thing of the past! :p

Remember to employ the tire pressure trick, because reducing the pressure in your tires is perhaps the greatest way to get unstuck... just don't spin your tires so much that you bury your truck first! ;)

The OP wanted to know if there really was a difference between an Off Road and a Sport... when he is informed of the facts then he can decide... that's what is important to me, the facts!

The OP also said he wants something great in the snow , and is leaning toward the Offroad for that reason

Seeing how the main difference in the Sport and Offroad models is the locker and in 4x4 models , ATRAC , can you demonstrate some factual evidence that a locker or ATRAC will help the OP in snow over a 4x4 equipped Sport ?

OZ, you are in Canada.. so you are the snow expert! I am lucky to get to drive in 8" of snow here in the mountains of San Diego County, where you live where 8 feet of snow is normal! ;)

The Sport has no traction advantages over the Off Road... ie. they BOTH have TRAC in H4.

It is the additional traction systems that only the Off Road has, that should always be mentioned so the buyer is informed. Some here keep saying one has a cool hood scoop and the other doesn't, as the difference!!??

In Low Range, without any mods, the Sport only has an open differential in the front and back (2009+). Is one tire spinning in the front, and one in the back really better than three or 4 tires spinning and grabbing?

When I did go in the snow, I used my locker and A-TRAC together... and I never got stuck or had any issues... that is what I know. However, the other TW member I was wheeling with was in a Sport, and he also did not get stuck... so there you go, it may not be needed, but a locker and A-TRAC are items you pay for that add to the traction of the truck. A fake hood scoop and colored trim are items you pay for that do nothing to help the truck move, but make it look 'cool'... But, they are there and Toyota sells a lot of Sports! I have had Sport owners tell me IF THEY KNEW the differences, then they would have gotten the Off Road. So, to me, information is KEY to making the correct decision on which to spend over $30,000 dollars on!

Here's a fun fact for you , you can't buy a DC Offroad in Canada , Toyota doesn't sell them , and yet we tend to get a bit of snow , and I see DC Sports driving around all the time , no problem in snow

OP , it's true that the 4x4 Offroad has a locker and ATRAC , neither of these will help you in snow on road , they may have a benefit offroad in deeper snow

The 4x4 Sport is equally capable in normal snow driving conditions

Assess all your driving needs and go from there

    Thank you all so much!

I think i am going to stick with the Off Road package and just do a hood swap at work. I am sure my sales dept. will let me. They both cost the same and seems like you get so much more with the OR.

    Thanks again!

    Enjoy your truck

You might be able to get a hood swap as part of your purchase deal , a friend of mine got a non-scooped hood put on his Sport prior to purchase as part of his new truck deal

Hahaha. It will happen again right now.

Personally I was deciding between a tx and a sport. The regular TRD OR was boring to me.
The tx has the wheels, decals and the locker but the sport has the scoop, the lack of chrome and the painted mirrors.

I hemmed and hawed and went with a sport and added beadlock wheels. I sold the 17s and put that towards the beadlocks. The price came in less than a tx. Adding a hood, grille, bumper, mirrors, door handles was not practical.
For me the looks were most important. Both are more than capable in snow or ice.

If I NEED a locker one day that's a cheap add.

We get snow in CT and the atrac is all you need.
Lockers do nothing in the snow unless you're beyond stuck. You can't use lockers on the street even if it's snowy.
You won't use a locker in any daily snow situation.

My last yota had neither. No atrac. No locker. No LSD.
I never got stuck once. Not in ct. Not in vt.
