    Hello fellow Tacoma lovers!
Just bought a 2013 TRD Sport Tacoma with a 5 speed auto transmission. Toyota Certified 32K miles. I traded in a 2010 Canyon with auto tranny. I was wondering if anyone can fill me in on their impression of the feel of their transmission. Want to make sure whatexperiencing is normal. It almost feels like it's Slowing down when your coasting. You hit the gas it goes good, but once you take your foot off the gas it's automatically slows down. Sort of like downshifting a standard tranny. My neighbor who is a mechanic and has a Camry said all Toyotas are like that. Pleaslet me know what you think. Thank you in advance.

I've got a 2013 5MT with similar mileage. Next time I drive it, I'll make sure to pay attention to that specifically. When you say that it decelerates similar to a manual, what type of downshifting are you speaking about, like a 6/5 to 4 or 6/5 to 3? It definitely doesn't have a 6 to 3 feeling unless you're locking it into one of the gears 1 - 3. In that case absolutely. I'll have to see what it is like when it comes to just taking your foot off the gas in overdrive.

I have a 2013 SR5 Texas Edition DCSB, and yes I have noticed that it considerably slows down when you take your foot off the pedal, so I would say that it is normal. I actually use it to my advantage, let go of the pedal way before a light and you don't have to use the brakes as much. In fact, sometimes I have used this slowing down trait to slow down when I see cops ahead without being too "obvious". Now that it is lifted, it seems to be a bit more noticeable.

passive engine braking, and injector shutoff......perfectly normal................strange to relearn after most autos upshift when letting off, but perfectly normal here.

Thank you for the feedback guys. I was getting concerned that I may have bought a lemon. It sounds like what Im experiencing is normal. I've had a lot of Vehicles in my lifetime, over 34. Including a 99 SR5 Tacoma, 5 speed manual extended cab and an 02 Tacoma TRD extended cab, Automatic. The 2010 GMC Canyon I traded in shifted great and is nothing like my Taco. Have you guys had any experience with installing in channel vent visors? Thx again.

Still think I have a transmission issue. In bumper to bumper traffic today and transmission is shifting from 1st to 2nd constantly, shifts are hard, not smooth at all. Going to visit a friend tomorrow who has a 2014 Tacoma V6 with same 5speed auto transmission to test drive his. In speaking to him, it sounds like he doesn't have the same issues that I'm having. If it turns out his is completely different than mine (Normal, smooth shifting), I will be going back to the dealership. It's ToyotaCertified with the platinum coverage. I just hope my dream truck isn't turning into a nightmare. #Frustrated!!!

Hi Gearcruncher. I did click on the link you left but it was related to the 4 cylinder motor. I then clicked onto your profile posts to look for my transmission (5 speed auto trans) as you had noted. I couldn't find the post. I did read a post you left about a flash that can be done by Toyota on this year Taco. Is that how the memory is cleared? Do you think the original owner drove high speeds only, and that's why the shifts from 1st to 2nd are so hard? I appreciate you responding. My Wife can see how down I am about this whole situation. Any other feedback you can provide is much appreciated. I will use the info you provide when reaching out to Toyota dealership I bought it from. Do you think I should push for a transmission flush as well?

Hey paul . That link covers the 5 speed auto tranny . A hard shift from 1 to 2 can be a number of things . considering its a computer controlled transmission , have a look to see if there are any codes .

Thanks G.C, I was able to track down instructions on how to clear the memory. I did this last night and it seems to have worked. Drove to work this morning and shifts from 1st to 2nd seem much better / smoother. Throttle response is much better, not hesitating after slowly stepping on gas anymore. I really appreciate your insight, it definitely has helped. I will keep you posted. Thanks again!
