    I had been thinking about the idea of more paved runoff area too, but in the wet I don't think it would have mattered.

    I say leave the cars alone, but perhaps some type of "blocker bars" on the recovery equipment to avoid sliding under them.

    I'm new to this, but it seems the cause of his injuries was going under the rear of that loader. Without making overkill, and unnecessary, rule changes, the simple solution to prevent another occurence would be to outfit those loaders (at locations where they must be used inside the track) with "blocker bars" that would prevent a car from going under. Very similar to what one sees on the back of semi-tractor trailers, only obviously closer to the ground. :notsure:

    In the dry I could understand blaming the driver but not in the wet, especially when there are times when drivers spin out even behind the safety car. Not to mention there was a green flag waving at the crash site.

    That rule should have happened a long time ago. Anytime you bring heavy construction equipment on a track, the cars needs to be off it. Yellow flags are just an indicator of upcoming track obstruction and that you are not allowed to pass. Double yellow is be prepared to stop, but still doesn't tell the driver that a solid steel multi ton road grader is behind the next corner. All the safety equipment in the world won't help if you hit something like that. Hell, I wouldn't want to hit anything that big in my Tacoma.
    I've worked a few Grand Prix's and it just boggled my mind to see large equipment sharing the track with race cars. It's just insane when you think about the physics. The crash video is horrific. Looks like a missile hit the back end of the crane. My prayers for Bianchi and his family.

    The rain intensity had only dramatically increased 2-3 laps prior to the crash , hard to blame the driver for not knowing when the cut off was for inters vs wets especially as standing or running water around the track would be evolving the whole time

    IMO if a recovery vehicle is on or near the track to remove a car; especially in the rain, the safety car should be out. He was hauling azz when he hit the crane. :eek:
