    If there is going to be a safety car for every recovery , given the current safety car rules for lapped cars , you can expect most races to run at 1/3 - 1/2 race distance single file behind the safety car .

    Given that this incident and Martin Brundle's near miss in 1994 are the only two race car / recovery vehicle interactions I can recall , that means 2 incidents in over 400 grand prix

    I think that if they do anything , it needs to be to address the situation of a car going under the recovery vehicle , or greatly reduce the speed allowed in a double waved yellow sector , anything else is going to destroy the races

    Similar to my suggestion earlier, which is to outfit the equipment with a soft barrier within the same plane the cars are traveling. Let the car's existing crash structure do its job.

    The update from the family is somewhat encouraging; it makes it sound as though his head injuries are due to his brain bouncing around inside his skull, as opposed to something much worse.

    I think another issue that's getting lost in the noise is that not only could a car hit the recovery vehicle, but also hit the marshals! I think the bigger issue needs to be how to SAFELY recover vehicles during the race. Having people and construction equipment at the run-off areas isn't safe, but how do you avoid nascar-like races but keep people and equipment safe during a F1 race?

    I think trying to mitigate a risk that has a 1% chance of occuring in an event as inherently dangerous as an F1 race is impossible

    and " crash proofing " the recovery vehicles would do nothing to protect the marshals on foot . In the Bianchi incident , even if the recovery vehicle was crash proofed , if Bianchi's car had followed the path Sutil's had , it would have probably killed 3 or more marshals , and that's the other part of the point I was making that mitigating the risk entirely is impossible

    One thing that's important to remember about the marshals is that they are all volunteers

    I don't think a marshal has been killed in a recovery since the Tom Pryce incident in the 70's where a marshal was struck crossing the track , the only other two fatalities I can remember is the marshal that was killed when Jacques Villeneuve's tire went through the fence in Australia in 2001 and the marshal killed right after the Montreal GP in 2013 when he was run over by the recovery tractor moving Esteban Gutierrez's Sauber back to the pits

    I guess you could deem the Montreal fatality to be during a recovery of the car albeit after the race was over

    Yes they are but they are not rookies auto racing is extremely big in Europe and the waiting list is long just to get a chance to become a volunteer they are trained but it is true they are not drivers and do not know how a car handles under adverse conditions. No one ever expects a crash like that one I did not see the race but I can tell you there was excessive speed involved under a yellow that loader goes somewhere between 30 and 50 thousand pounds to lift that thing off the ground and still have the driver live through it is a testament to the overall safety of the car. I’m not saying just because it is you should dive it like a tank but there is just so much you can do during a race to make it safe and still have it be a race it is inherently dangerous.
