Partial success today! I installed the steering wheel controls and they worked just like they should. The voice control button works perfectly!

To remove the old controls and install the new is a very easy job which took me less than 30 minutes. First thing you need to do is unplug the negative terminal from the battery. The power needs to be removed for at least 90 seconds before messing with the airbag. Next, remove the 2 plastic trim pieces on the left and right side of the steering wheel. Once removed you will use a T30 Torx bit to unscrew the airbag. There is one screw per side. Once unscrewed the airbag will pull right out. Remove the ground plug from the airbag and then the black and orange connectors. To remove the connectors you need a tiny flat head screw driver to pry up the yellow portion of the tab. Once that is done use the small screwdriver to pry the whole connector loose. Search Tacoma steering wheel removal on Youtube to see a video. After that you just remove the 4 phillips head screws holding the controls with a #2 screwdriver and then unplug the controls. The controls just pull off the steering wheel. Install the new controls by just going in reverse and that is all.

I have an audio buddy of mine making the extra wire I need and it has not arrived yet. I will post an update and some pictures when I get that installed.

The controls were $96 and change plus shipping. The part number is listed earlier in the thread (post 96) and I'd buy them from Camelback Toyota.

    I have no idea.

But you can fix it by going to your album and click on each individual picture.. at the bottom you will see an edit option. Once you get there, youll be able to rotate your pictures.

So, what controls are not working without the extra wire? And where will the extra wire go?

Just ordered the switches myself. Metal4130 - waiting for the info on the missing wire. I look forward to hearing about your luck adding the extra circuit. Thank you for all of your hard work and help. I really appreciate the help with the steering wheel disassembly!

Don't think there are any fuzzy details. This has already been figured out. It's in one of the other thread/replies in this thread. The fourth wire is for the left/right and return/ok buttons. It runs from Pin 3 on the S8 connector to Pin 24 on the R15 connector. This information was direct from the TIS wiring diagrams. As Metal4130 confirmed the Voice Control button just "works" as its signal is carried by the existing wires, which was also derived from vieiwing the TIS wiring diagrams.

I made the 4th wire connection when I replaced my head unit. Just waiting for my new controls to arrive. The unknown (because I have not pulled my steering wheel apart yet) is if all pins are present on the steering wheel connector spiral cable itself, AND the spiral cable provides a connection for all pins from this connector to the S8 connector on the steering column. It should. Metal4130 can probably speak to the connector behind the air bag having all pins, and he'll know the remainder soon enough.

For those of you unfamiliar with the spiral cable, it is a flat ribbon cable inside a circular housing. It provides electrical connections for the horn, steering wheel controls, air bag. It allows the wheel to turn x amount of times stop-to-stop, and winds/unwinds like a clock-spring, while maintaining that electrical connection. I believe there are 2 types of spiral cable assembly, from what I could discern. One that contained connections for just the horn and airbag, and one that had all connections present, used or not.

Hopefully I can purchase a wire of the appropriate length along with the pins installed from one of you guys (yogster or metal4130) as I have not had much luck up here with the dealer with respect to the small parts. They always want a VIN and have no sense of adventure. So far I have ordered all parts from the US.

Once I get my controls(should be another week), I'll tear it all apart and find out if I have the right size pins. If not I'll order a bunch and send some your way!

Attached are diagrams for a 2014 and 2013 Tacoma

2014 is the non-JBL Nav unit
2013 is the non-jbl, non-nav base audio touch screen

They are in PDF format. Page breaks from right to left, this is how they are extracted from TIS. Without the SVG viewer and online access this is the best way to extract.

On the bottom of each doc are all associated connectors. Pin numbering is looking at the connector side (not harness side) head on.

I could not figure out the pins, and I was probably going to spend more dollars trying to figure out the right ones, then just ordering appropriate repair leads. The pins (actually the harness has the female portion) were the same as the ones that came with the 4wd illumination 4runner "kit", so I knew they would work...

    82998-12420

This is about $5 from Camelback. Best to order with something else, or the shipping makes it not worth it...

So I ordered two of these and used an appropriate length of 20 AWG wire. Well I think it was 20. Maybe 18. Cannot use wire bigger than 18, though as the pins are small. It think when I wire tied it along main harness and routed up through dash to steering column it was maybe 4-5'. I soldered the "repair leads" to either end of this wire, used heat shrink tube to insulate, unlocked the connectors (careful, you don't want all pins to come out, else you be putting a puzzle back together!), inserted the pin and locked back up.

Including dash removal, maybe about 30 minute job.

I won't know for sure until I take it apart

For future reference, what is a good site for components like this?

I was looking at some of the robotics hobby sites. Some stuff looked "about right", but not being sure, I just went with what I knew.

Also tried finding by connector type via sites that sold Molex connectors. But did not get very far there.

    N26, Pins 11/12 and 23/24

    It's a 24 pin jack.

If you bought one of those ebay pre-made kits, it will work, even though the connector is 16 pins. You just need to shave tabs off connector and ensure you plug in all the way to the left. This is because the pins used are the left-most pins on the either the 16 pin or 24 pin jack. Or you can buy the correct connector

    90980-12554

and take the pins out of the supplied one and insert into the correct slots in the new one.

Thank you guys. I am waiting for my controls to ship and with the correct part number, I can try my local Toyota dealer. Failing that I will purchase some pins off of the forum from one of the members who posted above. I appreciate the freely sharing of your information!
