Has anyone install the navigation on an 09 and got the steering wheel controls to work?

DCLB Black 4WD Illumination dial from 4runner, Flyzeyes LED. Hardwire GPS and Valentine1 with BlendMount mirror mount, TRD shift knob, tube steps, swapped out for signal lamp mirrors. Garmin Eco-Route HD for Bluetooth ODBII Diagnostics, 2014 Entune Plus w Navigation, Leer 100XL dome light wired to dome circuit, pop&lock tailgate and cap locks.
This in fact has changed on 2014. I did not review the illumination EWD on TIS. I reviewed the S8 connector pins and what the uses were on both years. I should have looked at all the wiring diagrams for the controls - which would be audio/phone control AND illumination. Never take anything for granted!

    Here's the difference:

On 2013 the illumination circuit uses the wire on pin 4 - which is also common to the steering wheel controls - to complete the circuit. Pin 12 is the illumination circuit and is the same on both model years.

On 2014 the illumination circuit uses pin 9 which has a wire fed from ground way over on the passenger side. Pin 9 is empty on 2013 MY. In 2014 the illumination circuit for the steering wheel is routed to common "instrument panel" ground. On the 2013 it is through the radio. Don't know why the change was made.

I'll have to make another wire and try out some options.

I'll post my findings. Snow storm heading our way and I have no garage, so probably won't be able to do too much until later next week.

Also the correct part number for Toyota "repair" leads for the S8 and R15 connectors is

    82998-12870

These will set you back $12. A piece. For a 3" piece of wire and pin receptacle. A better option might be using one of the vendors mentioned earlier in the post.

Barring going the salvage route, this is still a better option to acquire the voice control functionality. By the way, the 2013 RH circuit for voice control AND internal silicone button pad AND LED are present in the 2013 controls. All that's missing is the actual button itself.

As acquiring the controls for 2013 which merely add the voice button costs $300, and the 2014, with a few caveats as discovered, cost $96, well....

Have the drawings? I understand what you are saying but def would like to look at a diagram. My head just works better that way. I have a garage but looking at the connecter I didn't see an easy way to remove a pin without the special tool. Will take a look later.

EDIT: Yogster, the pins you are talking about are on the connection from the switches to the spiral cable or the S8 connector?

EDIT2: Ok, pin4 is needed to carry EAU conns on S8. So wiring a ground to S8, pin 9 should do it.

So from my understanding in have to move pin 4 to the pin 9 position? Or just wire in pin 9 from one of the illumination circuits closest would be the fog lights and such

No, pin 4 is for the steering wheel controls. This cannot be moved

Many circuits in Toyota vehicles are ground switched. And some grounds do not immediately "ground", like the domelight.

Also some of the dash illumination leds are dimmable. I not believe the steering wheel leds dim. They are a constant, but lower intensity.

Once I have manufactured another jumper wire, I will attempt to:

    a) jumper back into PIn 4 on the s8 connector
    b) attempt to tie into the "instrument panel ground" which is in different location depending on MY.

Others can proceed at their own risk:)

Dam! I hope mine arrive soon I want start on this. Maybe the steering wheel controls dim on the 2014 but not on the 2013 or vice versa.
And yes yogster is the man. Thanks for all this info!

Just checked the lights on my 2013 are not dimmable. I guess that may be why there is a Minor wiring difference.

    Didn't get a PM.

Haven't had a chance yet to route it to have that factory clean look, but it is installed and stowed in the glove box. I'm still thinking where the best spot to mount it. But I'm limited to where I could put it because of the length of wiring.

This is the mic I'm talking about. I think the mic that you're talking about that's integrated into the rear view mirror is most likely for the higher end JBL trim.

Grounding pin 9 on connector S8 will illuminate the steering wheel control LEDS - confirmed this today.

This does NOT appear to be a negative switched circuit, ie, there is not a + voltage always present. Turn off the lights, and leds go off.

So any ground should do. I'd probably try to find some chassis ground in the vicinity of the steering column.

I just did this temporarily, as I do not have any extra pins, as I had not planned on this contingency.

Than I was wrong on that. Does the mic plug directly up to the 2014 head unit?

Plugs into the 28-pin conversion harness, conversion harness plugs into the headunit.

Steering wheel audio control plugs into that open plug.
