Thanks for the write up! This looks very doable. Here's my dilemma, i'vt got an '06 without steering wheel controls, and I don't really need them except for the Voice Activation. I am comfortable creating my own "Push to Talk Button" but I am not sure which pins need to be joined to activate the voice prompt. Anybody have an idea?

It's gotta be simple for mine since I already have the rear camera from factory. I know he makes a harness for trucks that didn't come with the factory camera as well and those would be more pricey.

Not hating on this at all because I was considering this myself. But after seeing the cost of $600, what is the advantage of this over just buying a n aftermarket. Because you can get a dang good radio for $600 and they're not hard to hook up. This retrofit just seems like a ton of work to have a "stock" radio

It's really not a lot of work - just getting the right harnesses and a simple trim of the radio surround. How many aftermarket head units out there use a custom dash piece for installation? Same scenario really.

Personally, I like having an OEM unit over aftermarket because I feel it's cleaner looking than aftermarket units. For other people they care to spend their money on a Pioneer, no problem with that. It's your money and you should do what you're comfortable with.

Just put a 2013 radio in my 05 tacoma, does anyone know if I can buy some type of adapter to make the steering wheel controls work? Thanks!

Just wanted to add a bit to this thread. I ordered an XM Unit for my 2006. I did not have an XM Antenna in the truck so I had to go aftermarket. There is an easy solution to get the antenna installed using Toyota's proprietary plug. You need to buy one of these adapters: Adapter. Or you can buy it as a kit with the Antenna: Antenna & Adapter.

I mounted the antenna in the dash board in the pocket located behind the stereo - and so far it seems to be working ok. I have no experience with XM so I am not sure how consistent the signal is supposed to be. I tested it in a rural area with lots of hills and trees, and I received signal 90-95% of the time. Not sure if mounting the antenna externally would help or not...

Received the harness - about $60 shipped to me

There's 4 full pages of instructions and I haven't gotten a chance to read through them all yet let alone install this thing. Glancing over them briefly if I remember correctly one wire has to be added to the #2 pin of the 28-pin plug going into the radio (and if there's already a wire in the pin #2 slot you have to cut it making me a tad nervous). The other side of the harness also includes a pigtail so I'm sure another pin will have to be added somewhere else.

Here's the instructions (sent in print form but I just typed them out on my iphone!!):

    1. Remove radio

    2. Remove dash piece below steering column

    3. Find empty 24-pin molex connector at rear of radio. Plug in matching side of harness to it. If you have a 2014 radio you will need a 24-pin connector. If you have a 2013 radio you will need a 16-pin connector.
24-pin connector is part number: 90980-12554

    4. One red wire remaining with pin attached to it- this is reverse signal wire that the radio requires for the camera signal to be placed in reverse. This extra wire needs to be installed in the #2 pin of the 28-pin connector that is next to the 16-pin connector. To determine the #2 pin unplug the connector from radio and look at it from the pin side (not radio side) with the connector release on top. #2 pin will be second from the left on top row. There is a pin lock that will need to be lifted up slightly with a pick tool however it's not necessary to remove the lock completely. Pin should snap into place when slid into the connector. Do not reinstall the radio completely until the system has been tested.

4a. Some vehicles there is a connector with a single wire already plugged into the normally empty 16-pin socket. If this is the case on your vehicle an extra wire is supplied in the harness with a barrel connector. You'll need to cut off that single wire and relocate it to the new camera harness.

    5. Route the wiring from the rear of the radio to the front of the fuse box area.

    6. Locate the 2 white plugs in front of the fuse box at the upper left hand side. One has 4 pins and the other has 14 pins. Unplug the 4 pin connector an plug it into the camera harness. The remaining red wire on the harness with the barrel connector on it must be attached to the #11 wire on the 14-pin connector. You have to cut the #11 wire at the 14 pin connector and crimp the red wire on the harness to it. The easies way to determine which side of the cut wire is as follows: while looking at the connector work on the left side if it. In other words the side closest to the door. You may have to peel back some tape from the harness to sin good access to the wire you need. There is no need to disconnect the harness from it's mate to complete this step. Once enough wire is exposed you can identify the #11 wire. It will be on the bottom row (the connector lock is considered the top) of wires right in the middle and is typically red also. Cut the wire to the side of the cut wire that goes to the connector and not the side that goes toward the front of the vehicle. Tie off the other side of the cut wire and secure rest of harness.

    7. Test installation by turning ignition on and placing vehicle in reverse.

    8. Reassemble dash pieces and you are done.

Just an update - the harness was plug and play accept for the pin you have to add on the 28-pin connector and the red wire you have to splice into above the fuse box
More info on that red wire in this thread:
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/149448-noob-help-backup-camera.html

I also learned that if you have a 2013 radio you'll have a 16 pin connector which is what he originally sent me. I'll go up and modify the post above with the correct info.

I may be interested in doing this with my '13 non-JBL. I am still concerned it may not be factory-like in function, however. Anyone have any info on this specific swap ('13 non-nav to '14 non-jbl nav)?

I can't speak to the '13 model truck specifically but in my 2009 I just had to get the Toyota 28-pin harness for the 2014 Nav to work in my truck. The extra harness I just had made was for my backup camera to display on my head unit rather than my rear view mirror. I'll try to find some links for you Andrew.

Does your truck have the steering wheel controls already?
