Hello all, today my tacoma with 350k KM on it started doing something strange, best i can describe it is it feels like when you're driving and momentarily hit some ice and "slip" or feels like when traction control comes on(and maybe a mild "jolt, or thunk"), this has happened at all speeds, the truck accelerates with power still, and usually does this when just "maintaining" speed. any ideas?

I'll look into it, i recently put a spare steelie rim tire on the front as I had a flat, but I didn't have problems until a week after the change. i wonder if that would effect anything. I might also slip the drive shaft off and run it in 4Hi to see if the problem goes away, it felt like it came from the rearend

Put in R and floor it with brake on for 2 seconds and let idle for 5 minutes after
RPMS should not go above 4k

    if if does
do a pan drain and fill with 3 qts and re check level

Check your u-joints too for slippage.

I've had a u joint go before and it wasn't the same symptoms, but that was only the rearest one. the center carrier "bushing" seemed a little slack but not something i'd consider too concerning, i checked for any play in the u joints and i couldn't feel any.

I might slip the drive shaft off tomorrow and drive around in 4hi and see if it happens again

Well, it's definitely the transmission, now upon acceleration its loosing power/slipping and thumping, traction control light went on as well.

Thats sad but glad you found the issue. Transmission issue with your mileage is a bit unusual. Keep us updated.

Its tests the quality of trans fluid making sure it can transfer torque

I did it years ago when I had the same symptoms

This seems odd to me. By chance did you recalibrate the VSC? VSC activation will light up the traction light.

Are you sure it’s not a spark plug or bad coil pack issue causing a misfire? My ‘01 had a bad plug wire causing misfire and manifested very similar- felt like slipping trans.

well another update sorry for being all over the place, but I just went to go start it and i can now tell it is certainly misfiring or something.

    It was not the transmission

Check engine light flashing now, engine running rough in park. I havn't changed the plugs or wires on this in the time i've had it either

seems weird to cause this much trouble over one misfire though and what's the chances of others going at the same time?

I've no idea what this means.
U-joints don't slip. A bad ujoint will squeak or at worst clunk. But if they are bad enough to slip you will be walking back down the road to pickup your driveshaft that yeeted itself out of the truck.

I dont have a OBd2 scanner, but the plugs havnt ever been changed for the 360k life. and it's fairly cheap, if that dont help I will see I can borrow a scanner
