A couple of weeks ago, I started hearing a noise coming from the engine compartment during cold start and it's been coming on and off during the entire time. I have it checked by the dealership and they did not find anything and there was no sign of any abnormality on the engine or anywhere else in the vehicle.

Anyway, this morning while driving to work, my Tacoma was running fine and then it started slowing down while I was on the freeway so I knew something was wrong. I pulled over to the side and checked for any indication on the dashboard and looked underneath the vehicle for any fluid leaking out. When I did not find anything I started the car and put it on drive but the vehicle won't move. I shifted the transmission in reverse and it's the same thing, the gear won't engage.

To make the story short, I have my vehicle towed to the dealership and was told that the transmission is gone and needs to be replaced! It's a good thing that my vehicle is still under warranty and they ordered a new transmission and I was provided a courtesy vehicle by the dealership.

I bought my Tacoma 6 months ago and only have 9,000 miles on it!

Judging by your explanation , there are 3 possibilties that come to mind .
    (1) the transmission is for some reason very low on fluid .
    (2) Transmission pump failure or broken splines on the input shaft .
    (3) stripped converter splines ...no movement at all,
Might be too late but you may find some usefull information here .

As mentioned above , could you post back regarding what they found ?
Glad you are still on warranty . A replacement trans from Toyota runs about $ 3500
